When evaluating politicians (or anyone) for a position, consider Romans 3:23, "for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God," the question is whether one confesses and repents--turns away--from their wrong doing(s).
When someone makes a statement, do you instantly seek any possible correction, or do you lift them up? Wisdom seeks understanding then appropriate guidance or rebuke. Champions build and straighten others simultaneously.

Have you heard anyone say: “1 step forward and 2 steps back...” For me this indicates I went too far or I need greater perspective and/or appreciation. Better a step backward than continuing on the wrong path.

Cast Nets Right: Feed My Sheep!

John 21:15-19

Six of the disciples, professional fishermen, are skunked with empty nets at the end of an all night fish outing as they bring their boat toward shore early in the morning. Perhaps the rising sun remains below the horizon, providing only a dim hue in the early morning sky.

A bystander along the shore about 100 yards away, whom the disciples are unable to distinguish, projects his voice, “Haven’t you any fish?” Upon confirmation of their lack of success, the bystander promises success of catching fish by lowering their net to the right side of the boat.

What is your reaction after a full day in your profession, operating in your area of expertise, and lacking any productivity and some bystander promises success for you with one additional attempt to the right side? Do you respond in faith with action? Do you laugh? Do you explain and justify to the bystander all the reasons why “casting your net” one last time is ridiculous.

The disciples obeyed, 153 large fish are in their net, the net tears from overload. One of the disciples NOW recognizes Jesus.

How often do our full nets preclude our recognizing Jesus in our life? Obedience to the commanding voice, while lacking certainty of whom the voice belongs, produces their full nets. Does this strongly resemble faith? They lower their nets to the right, in obedience to a commanding bystander in faith.

Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit reside in the hearts of all who believe and trust Jesus Christ as their Savior. Are we obedient, in faith, to commands of bystanders in lowering our “nets” on the right side for increased yields?

Discernment is significant in calibrating our heart, mind and ears to the voice of Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. Their voice and message is comforting in congruency with scripture and convicting when we lack congruency. The right hand signifies righteousness, the side of the sheep. Beware of bystanders guiding you to the left, the side of goats.

The Bible clearly states Faith pleases God; this helps explain why Christ probably avoids identifying Himself before the command. Jesus provides other examples of those failing to respond in faith, missing their opportunity for His Blessings. In fact, the unprepared perish.

The week before Christmas, I called my former teammate Dan. He quickly answered saying, “Rick, I will call you back in 15 minutes.” Our
long-time friendship, enable our voices to be instantly recognized by one
another. Additionally, his quick, concise response correlated with his communication style. This quickly verified my dialing the correct
number.

Later in the week, I visited with my life-long friend and Cousin Kent. Once again, a life time of communication enable instant verification and recognition of tonality, style and message.

The greater amount of time you spend communicating with Jesus
Christ and the Holy Spirit, the more enhanced is your recognition of His
tonality, style and message in your heart and mind. Instinctively, you will recognize, obey and reap the resulting great yields.

The Bible says the we reap what sow; and if we sow sparingly, we reap sparingly. This hold true of our harvest from investing our time in knowing His voice.

What great Yields await you upon hearing, obeying and responding to a bystander, who you later learn is Jesus?

After the BIG catch, and with the recognition of Jesus, Peter bails out of the boat to run toward Jesus who stands by a camp fire with fish and bread. During breakfast Jesus engages Simon Peter with repeated, pointed questions:

Jesus: “Simon son of John, do you truly love me more than these?”

Simon Peter: “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.”

Jesus: “Feed my lambs.”

Jesus: Simon, son of John, do you truly love?”

Simon Peter: “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.”

Jesus: “Take care of my sheep.”

Jesus: Simon son of John, do you love me?”

Simon Peter (with hurt feelings) “Lord, you know all things;
you know that I love you.”

Jesus: “Feed my Sheep”

This past week the Lord has spoken to my heart regarding the completion of the book proposal project.

“Rick, do you love me?” Yes, I do Lord! “Feed my Sheep.”

Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit residing in me, remind this book project is about serving God and feeding His sheep.

Additionally, the Lord has directed me in another matter of Faith; “Rick, do you love me?” Yes, I do Lord! “Take care of my sheep, feed my sheep.” Often times caring for and feeding HIS sheep requires BOLD FAITH!

Responding BOLDLY in FAITH is enhanced when we are continually communicating with our Lord, becoming increasingly familiar with
His voice in our life.

The Lord Blesses us with amazing, net tearing, catches of prosperity. This prosperity may be spiritual, emotional, recreational, financial, physical; all the aforementioned or any combination. When Blessed, respond in your Love of Christ by feeding His lambs, caring for His sheep, and feeding his Sheep.

The required FAITH may challenge or exceed your comfort zone, as my dad said in our last meaningful conversation, “Always Trust God,
remember that son, Trust God Always.” This correlates with Proverbs 3:3-5.

Trust God!

Respond with Obedience and Faith!

Love Christ!

Feed His Sheep!

Jealously - Envy - Greed

When hearing comments regarding 'Corporate Greed' ask, "Which came first, Corporations or Greed?"

Greed, Jealousy and Envy result from selfishness independent of business structure or networth. (Galatians 5:19-26)

Check out the source of Jealousy next time you hear a Politician provoking Jealousy among the 'Classes.' (Ezekiel 8)

Occassionally over the years, I have ashamedly desired the success belonging to others. While attending marathons, I have become envious of those who started in the 'elite' positions because I felt I too deserved this status. However, due to various circumstances, my performance levels fell short of the 'elite' runner qualifications.

Other times, I selfishly desired the financial, and professional success of others. Greed has caused flashes of consideration of unethical behavior for financial or positional gain.

Have you experienced any these desires?

Each time the Lord, through His Holy Spirit residing in me, strongly convicts heart and mind of my errant selfishness. Selfishness is a product of living in the flesh, instead of the Spirit.

When you and I live in the Spirit of God, we KNOW the Eternal provider allocates everything in and to us needed to fullfill His Will for our lives.

Living in the Spirit reveals the resources allocated to others fullfills God's Will for their lives regardless of agreement with our human wisdom and understanding.

Selfishness, the nature of flesh, opposes God.

Jealously, Envy and Greed judge God and His Wisdom as errant!

A friend and I are conversing about God’s action and revelations
in our lives, and the amazing blessing for all who open their heart, mind, and soul to Christ Jesus. The Godly friend writes:

I think it’s such a blessing when He allows us to see Him working. We don’t always get to see it…whether He isn’t ready to reveal what He’s doing, or whether we’re so caught up in our own stuff that we are blind to it….it’s awesome when we do get to see. Sit back and enjoy the ride!!

Have you pondered a runner’s internal monitors of effort?

Coach Lyle Claussen during the 1990s lists the University of Nebraska-Kearney men’s cross country team weekly workouts on the bulleting in the hall way of the physical education building.

Adjacent to mileage, Lyle writes “easy,” “moderate,” or “hard,” whether morning or afternoon. Lyle provided my marathon training regimen in similar format.

Are you pondering how UNK runners’ and I discern “easy,” “moderate” and “hard”? Effort defines these relative terms; additionally conditioning and pace substantially correlate with these relative definitions. Previous workouts and mileage along with other factors contribute as well.

Logging vast mileage fine tunes and synchronizes the runner’s heart and mind. We discern our heart rate of 120 (easy), 150 (moderate) or 180+ (hard) beats per minute. Time and mileage enable monitoring; focus synthesizes data.

Focus synchronizes heart and mind!

In the late 1990s, a few runners began wearing heart rate monitors. Upon moving to Dallas August 2011, cognizance displays numerous runners wearing heart rate monitors. Why are an abundance of people, runners, unable to discern their heart rate?

Is our technologically dependent, fast paced world, fracturing our heart-mind synchronization?

Does this same phenomenon facture our discernment of the Holy Spirit in their lives? The NIV Bible uses “heart” or “hearts” roughly eighty times. If we are to “set your heart on things above,...” (Colossians 3:1), along with discerning those things God writes on our hearts (2 Corinthians 3), we are to “dwell in your heart through faith” does are heart-mind synchronization need fine tuning?

Focus synchronizes heart and mind in Christ.

Are you focusing on your relationship with Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit? Are you focusing on the pure word of God, who is Jesus Christ? Are you focusing on synchronizing your mind with God’s will written on your heart?

When my mind-heart synchronization is near perfection, I am in full tune of my body, soul and mind, as well as those around me.

The focus is on the Holy Spirit!

A Holy Spirit focus and resulting synchronization with our mind, produces thoughts, actions and words from and correlating directly to scripture, God’s pure word.

Focus on your Holy Spirit filled heart and mind!

The Sunday School leader on Sunday shared that he sat adjacent to the Cardinal's wives and kids at the World Series Saturday night. When Pujol hit his first home run, his son continued playing his computerized game, viewing it as an everyday occurrence.

How many kids, including when we were children, are/were oblivious to parents' amazing achievements in their walk with Christ? Do/did we fully appreciate parents' day to day honesty, intergrity, genorosity, forgiveness, mercy, faith and love?

Do these exceed a home run in the World Series?

During the fall sports seasons, many fans expect great achievements from their favorite high school, college and professional teams.

In the mid-1990s while living in Nebraska; I led "Prayers of the People" before the congregation of a relatively large church. Most expected their beloved Nebraska Cornhuskers to win yet another National Championship in football.

My last prayer remained simple: Lord, help us expend our efforts and strive for excellence in our own lives to reach the national level of success we expect of our favorite teams.

If the members of your favorite team followed your example of effort, discipline and excellence; would they achieve your expected level of success for them?

Authenticity

Today’s workout consists of two miles of warm-up, and four repetitions of five minute runs with three minutes of jog run to recover. After completing the first five minute run, I removed my shirt. This was once as common on warm days as tying the shoe laces on the shoes.

The purpose of removing the shirt is keeping my body temperature lower, enhancing the ability to run fast. As my weight increased and my abdominal muscles lost form, I discontinued removing my shirt.

I became more concerned of someone seeing my real, undefined, un-honed stomach, than staying cool; thus kept it covered.

My abdominal muscles are once again visibly tuned or honed, although necessary improvement remains. Today my shirt is off during the run as my abdominal muscles, thus I am no longer ashamed for their public revealing.

We lack any need to cover our well tuned and well defined core muscles. Only when they lack clear, concise definition do we desire covering them up in public.

Once again, our core, abdominal, muscles are reflective of our core beliefs and values. When our values and beliefs lack Biblical definition, we tend to cover them up. We are inauthentic.

When our core values and beliefs are well honed, tuned and highly correlated with the Christian Bible, the Spirit of Truth; we gladly reveal our self. We are eagerly authentic.

Removing one’s shirt while running in the warm and hot air enhances achievement. Similarly, removing all false coverings, fully exposing our authentic self enhances our relationship with Christ.

Enhancing our relationship with God: Father, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit; enhances relationships with those with whom we regularly interact.

Authenticity, fully revealing our core values, is tuning our heart, mind and soul with God: Father, Son (the Lord Jesus Christ) and the Holy Spirit; obediently and lovingly living his Word.

“Why am I running so slowly, regardless of increased training?”

Despite increased training, stretching for increased flexibility and apparent leg turnover at a respectable rate, my pace is slow.

“Why is my stride length so short?”

I continually ponder these and other questions, seeking improvement. Enjoyment of running is nearly proportional to my capable pace.

I move to Dallas the end of August 2011 to pursue my Masters of Theology (Th.M.) at Dallas Theological Seminary. This move prompts my commitment of regaining respectable physical fitness: losing weight and running relatively fast again.

Included with this commitment is strengthening my abdominal (ab) muscles, averaging less than one hundred ‘crunchers’ per week lacks sufficiency for fitness.

My ab work slowly increases with 50 to 200 per day three or four days per week, or an average of roughly four hundred repetitions of abdominal exercises per week.

A few weeks later, I notice my strides, measured by segments of sidewalk, are increasing. Additionally, efficient running form maintains throughout runs. The shoulders are back, hips forward, eyes and chin-up: running is fun!

Weight loss is a contributing factor, along with the significantly increased strength of my abdominal muscles.

This morning I completed 500repetitions of abdominal exercises, expecting a return of the eight-hundred to one thousand daily repetitions relied on when running 100 to 135 weekly miles years ago.

Yes, a strong correlation exists between the strength of one’s core and the ability to stride out, performing effectively and efficiency.

Running fast still hurts due from the required effort, yet I am able to achieve more with equal discomfort.

Does this have spiritual application? Absolutely!

When I struggle to achieve in life, when lacking efficiency and effectiveness; this is often attributed to a lack of focus on my core values.

Increasing the honing, fine tuning, of my core values which is my relationship with Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit increases my achievements in running life’s race.

We hear the voice of the Holy Spirit easily in our lives, we easily discern between right and wrong; we increase our physical and mental health.

The Bible also illustrates that sometimes physical ailments glorify the Father in heaven. Consequently, decisions and achievements are easier. “Easier,” is absent meaning “easy.”

Achievements continuing requiring exhausting effort, thus pain remains. We are able to “stride out” in life with the confidence of knowing right from wrong and discerning the Holy Spirit’s guidance.

How do we fine tune our Spiritual abdominal muscles? The Bible says, “…without faith it is impossible to please God,” and “Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.”

We strengthen our spiritual core when studying, and meditating on scripture; praying and listening for the small quiet, yet distinct voice, of the Holy Spirit.

As previously discussed, keep a journal of your “hunches” to increase your discerning proper understanding of the Holy Spirit’s voice in your life. The Holy Spirit always speaks in congruency with scripture. If any thought contradicting scripture lacks being from the Lord Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit.

Do you desire greater achievements and efficiency in life? Are you willing to endure the pain of training and achieving God’s will for your life? Are you aware achievements aligning with the Lord Jesus Christ are often different in comparison to achievements as defined by the secular, non-Christian, world?

As I hone and fine tune my spiritual core, I complete my school and professional assignments much quicker; yet equally as exhaustive. Effort is mandatory, regardless of our fitness level! Faith without works is dead! (James 2:26)

Exercise and strengthen your core, your spiritual abs, daily!

Let’s run effectively and efficiently with Christ together; daily increasing and honing our spiritual core beliefs. This keeps our chin-up, shoulders back and our hips forward; progress with confidence in our Lord Jesus Christ.

Teleprompter...

My keynote address at a Manhattan banquet a few weeks ago began:

“The Holy Spirit is my teleprompter!”

The Holy Spirit directs my thoughts and words while speaking and writing. These thoughts and words derive from studies and experiences directed and revealed to me from Him throughout life. This includes new perspectives revealed while speaking. I respond with obedience to the Holy Spirit, enabling my brain immediate triggering of my breath and vocal cords in creating the necessary sound waves for verbally projecting these thoughts.

Being prepared to speak anytime anywhere includes continual reading and reflecting on subjects of both of extreme and limited interests as well as observation and reflection of reading and life events. Additional preparation includes prayer and submission to God the Father, His Son the Lord Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit. Additionally, as previously discussed in blogs, keep a hunch or intuition journal to calibrate the voice of the Holy Spirit from your own.

Some lacking an intimate relationship with the Holy Spirit will discourage your hearing the Holy Spirit at every available opportunity presented. Some will cast doubt on your receiving the Holy Spirit. Rebuke their message as discouragement!

Seek the Lord in all, submit yourself to the Lord and He will direct your thoughts.

Is the Holy Spirit your teleprompter in all communications?

Give Him praise, credit and Glory in Everything!

Finisher or Competitor

The phone rang Saturday evening; Lyle Clausen returned my call from earlier in the day. Lyle is in the South Dakota Hall of Fame, inducted at the age of forty-seven for running and coaching achievements prior to reaching age forty.

Achievements continued during his coaching tenure at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. The cross country teams’ accumulated NCAA Division II team finishes of 8th, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 7th between 1990 and 1995; along with many athletes recognized as ‘All-Americans.’ His running achievements include finishing the marathon in every minute in the 2:20s at least twice.

Additionally, Lyle mentored me in training for the marathon. He emphasized proper training, training with a plan of increasing speed and endurance; callusing my body and mind to the pain experienced while running a competitive marathon. Running under three hours, qualifying for the Boston Marathon was a relative easy accomplishment without proper training.

Running in the 2:40s was achievable if lacking prudent direction. However, I did sought to be as competitive as possible; moreover Lyle continued prodding the desire for excellence. We believe in honoring the Lord Jesus Christ by fully submitting our body and mind to the training he places before us to achieve his will for our life.

During this Saturday’s phone conversation, we delved into discussing the marathon. Lyle described the paradigm shift from previous decades when any healthy person who toed the marathon starting line expected to be competitive to today’s paradigm where many participate simply to cross the finish line.

Lyle spoke of the days when the accepted, yet unspoken, standard for men was 2:36 and women 3:00 (three hours). Conversely, an abundance of today’s young, healthy participants are content finishing in four or five hours.

These slower times are a function of complacency and the resulting unwillingness for proper training. Training, in addition to speed and endurance, includes diet and weight management. Finishing the marathon is now an accepted achievement, regardless lack of competiveness in light of one’s ability if properly applied. “Hey, but you participated and finished,” is now considered a compliment.

A competitive marathon requires submitting every ounce of energy you possess. This physically hurts, thus few are willing to fully engage. The internal satisfaction of accomplishment is beyond comprehension of those simply striving to participate and finish.

Is the marathon mentality of participating instead of competing reflective of society’s spiritual life? Do many of us engage our walk with Jesus Christ as simply an activity to meander along, desiring only to participate and finish? Do we still engage in challenging training to callous our heart and mind to life’s ups and downs necessary for achieving the highest level God calls us to achieve in glorifying Christ?

Are we developing our spiritual speed and endurance? Are we increasing our speed of responding to Christ’s people with love, forgiveness, rebuke and assisting them in increasing their vision and our vision? Are we increasing our ability to endure responding to God’s word, love and rebuke?

Are we seeking to love God and his people with every ounce of energy we possess? This too is often externally painfully while internally gratifying beyond any measure.

Or are we simply content to participate and finish as Christians unwilling to truly challenge ourselves?

Are you a finisher or a competitor?

Flourish in the abundant life, fully submit and engage your spiritual life in training and running with Christ.

Confession

"If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just, forgiving us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not sinned, we make him a liar and his word has no place in our lives." (1 Jn. 1:8-10)

Imagine a beautiful, sunny March morning with the temperature rising from the 40s to the 50s. It was such a day during my stay with Uncle LaVerne and Aunt B on their farm while my parents were away for a few days in the mid-1970s.

This particular morning I am to wait by the pick-up while they feed the cattle in the yard by the old cement silo. My waiting includes climbing on a nearby gate of welded “sucker rod,” and sitting in their 1970 something dark green Ford F-100 long box pick-up with manual transmission. I repeatedly push the cigarette lighter in to heat, and remove it once it pops-up after reaching the predetermined temperature.

For some reason, I choose to touch the hot end of the cigarette lighter, yes this decision lacks wisdom. The rapidly moving, ferocious, heated wavelengths of the lighter slap and break my finger’s skin. My finger is mildly burned! The idiocy of my decisions and resulting actions shines as bright as the sun on my conscience. How does one hide a small burn mark on their finger? Other than wearing gloves or putting one’s hand in their pockets the task is impossible. Additionally, these two options are temporary at best.

Uncle LaVerne and Aunt B return to the pick-up, they inquire of my finger’s wound. I am too ashamed of my idiocy, both of playing with the lighter and touching it. I say that the burned occurred from climbing on the iron gate. They are surprised the gate is that hot, and remind me to be careful next time. Certainly, they knew I withheld truth, yet never further challenge me on it. They knew my Holy Spirit convicted conscience provides ample lecturing. They are correct!

Why did I lie? Lying is never justified, always deemed wrong by my parents and relatives. Why is confessing our mistakes frequently difficult? Would you agree at least three primary reasons exist?

1. We are ashamed of our mistakes and want them to go away.
2. We are prideful, thus avoid confessing we messed up.
3. We are concerned of the blame others place on us with our confession.

Yet, the Bible teaches confessing our mistakes-our sins-enables God to forgive our mistakes. God, because of the death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ, forgives our sin when we admit them and our dependence on Christ for our salvation. Furthermore, our forgiven sins are cast as far as the east is from the west; they go away when we admit our mistakes.

Will you, like me, humbly and readily admit your mistakes; readily acknowledging that Jesus is the only one who provides this forgiveness and permanently making them go away? All those filled with Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit will also readily forgive your confessed mistakes too.

Wisdom simplifies the complex!

Christ simplified scripture: Love God with all of your Heart, Soul and Mind. And Love (desire God's best) your neighbor, fellow man, as much as you love yourself.

Additionally, Christ taught in parables, using past relatable events to reveal Godly truths in common language.

The New Testament was written in Koine Greek. "Koine" means "common." The New Testament of the Bible was written in language used and easily understood by common, everyday people.

Kansas State University scientists visited our farm during my jr. high and early high school years. They were the first in the world to achieve various scientific breakthroughs. They explained these groundbreaking procedures in language that I, an average student, could easily understand. They spoke in the language of common, everyday, people.

They spoke with Wisdom! They simplified the complex, communicating with common language.

For example:

Complexity speaks of Neuro-Linguistic programming.

Wisdom speaks of preparing your mind with proper thinking.

Are you speaking and writing to your family and peers with wisdom? Are you communicating with language understandable to common, everyday, people?

Wisdom simplifies the complex!

Do you sell with Logic?

A frequent statement among Sales people and Sales Managers: Logic will result in failure of Sales. Instead, be emotional.

That statement has failed to make sense to me. If something does not makes sense, then why should it be purchased.

Have you considered the origin of the word, "logic"? Logic originates from the Greek word, "Logos" which means the 'Word' which is scripture.

Who is the 'Word,' who authored Scripture? The Bible tells us the Word became flesh. The Lord Jesus Christ is The Word. The Holy Spirit authored scripture.

Logic originated from Jesus and the Holy Spirit. They are pure TRUTH! When customers reject logic, they reject the Lord Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit.

Before harshly judging those who reject our product or service, let's be assured we have the necessary truth. Perhaps the customer knows truth the salesperson lacks.

"You can't sell with logic" is declaring, "You can't sell with Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit."

If Jesus' and the Holy Spirit's presence prevent a sale, do you want the sale? NO! You selling this product or service lacks being in the best interest of the customer and/or you the salesperson.

We are commanded to Love the Lord God with all of our Heart, Soul and Mind; and to Love our Neighbor (fellow man) as we Love ourselves. Obeying these commands necessitates desiring that which God deems best for our customers and us.

Selling with Logic, is selling Spiritually!

Are you in communication with God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit? If so, Rejoice in all sales results; for you are achieving God's will for your life and your customer's in that contemplated transaction.

Are you selling with Logic: Are you selling with the Lord Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit!

Pure Word

The most nutritious and tasting food is pure food. Do you enjoy food straight from the garden? I love garden fresh fruits vegetables such as corn, peas, beans, radishes, onions and strawberries.

Pure sugar is much better than artificial sweetners. Pure cream, butter and lard are the best for cooking and baking aids. Aunt Ruth Douglass cooked with lard her whole life; she died a few weeks before turning 97; she delivered food to the shut-ins through her 80s, and I believe early 90s.

Pureness provides an array of nutrients! Most nutrients are lost with artificial substitutions.

Are you in the Pure word of God? We consume the pure word of God when reading scripture and listening to his voice. Jesus says that his sheep know his voice. We consume pure scripture when acknowledging the pure authenticity of God's word. This acknowledgement includes confessing God's wisdom far exceeds our own. We are to understand that if scripture doesn't make sense or too 'far fetched,' our wisdom, knowledge and understanding are lacking.

Jesus is the word made flesh, a pure word is a pure Christ!

Beware, some preach an errant scripture, thus an errant Christ. Additionally, declaring portions as 'fiction' as I recently heard a pastor boldly proclaim, is judging "most Bible scholars..." to be wiser than God. A fictional Bible is fictional spiritual nutrition.

Enjoy purity and nutrition in both food and scripture. God is the creator of both.

"Feels like..."

It seems each year the exaggerations expand. A new plateau of exaggaration is attained this summer. I really rarely hear the temperature reported, rather we hear it "feels like 110." Yet, my thermometer may only read 95! What is wrong with saying it is 95 degrees and 65% (or whatever) humidity?

Can I pay my bills using the "Feels like" factor?

Listening to the "Feels like" temperature causes me to believe the weather the past few weeks has been hot. In reality, the temperatures are moderate, staying in the 90s.

We have become a world of perception over reality. Pictures are cut and paste into misleading backgrounds. Temperatures are reported as "feels like." If 95 degrees "feels like" 110, what does 110 feel like?

Societies evolving foundation of perception seeps into theology. Yet, God stands firm on his word. Many have effectively re-written the Bible to say "He that believes anything shall be saved.

The Holy Spirit is the spirit of truth. Standing firm in one area of life, results in standing firmly on truth in all areas of your life. There is only one Holy Spirit! Stand firm on truth, start by reporting the temperature accurately; then you will better understand that Christ is the only way to the Father.

Truth is Truth. Deception is Deception. Which do you choose?

If you remain comfortable with the "feels like" factor, try paying your bills or receiving your income in the "feels like" factor.

Bandage: Good or Too Restrictive

Thought the end of a finger had a REALLY dark tan all afternoon: Instead the bandage was a tad tight.

Yesterday while slicing potatos to make hashbrowns, my finger became caught on the slicer. The caused several cuts on the top of my finger. I placed two bandages on the finger, then replaced those with another bandage. I believed the bandage need to be wrapped tight on my finger for bleeding to stop and healing to occur.

I left the tight, restrictive bandage on too long. Whenever I glanced at my finger today, it appeared unusually dark. I lack excess concern because I wanted my finger to heal, and avoid additional bleeding. I continued rationalizing the tight restrictive bandage was good for my finger.

After exercising tonight, I realized my finger was nearly black. I quickly cutoff the bandage. The finger's natural color returned, along with its vibrant health. The wound is healing without a bandage, there is no bleeding.

My finger could easily represent the U.S. economy and the bandage equivocating Government and its regulation. There are moments when a bandage on a sector or portion of the economy is beneficial to assist it regaining health.

However, regulations, like bandages are potentially more harmful than good. Especially if too restrictive and left on too long. Just as my finger became discolored, the economy also becomes discolored. Only by removing the restrictive Government 'bandage' do we restore economic vibrancy.

Are you, or have you ever felt, overwhelmed with achieving all your responsibilities and tasks each day, week, month or year? Do you feel as if you lack the necessary mental, emotion, physical and spiritual energy? Do you believe Christ is calling you to achieve great things, yet you are unsure HOW to achieve them?

I too have felt this way numerous times, whether working on the farm, as an agronomist, an athlete, coach, businessman, speaker or heading to seminary. Where does the energy originate to achieve all Christ desires for me, and for you, to achieve?

What is energy, where and how does it derive? Let’s examine science in the discipline of physics.

The equation for Energy: E=mc2

The Theory of Relativity was discovered by physicist Albert Einstein in the early Twentieth Century. Energy = mass multiplied by the speed of light squared, or times itself. One of the revelations of this equation is that all matter has the same energy per gram. Stated another way, a gram of straw has the same energy as a gram of uranium. Mass is matter which is wavelengths. Sound, light and thoughts are also wave lengths.

The speed of light determines the energy. I have studied and read of this formula a multitude of times in the last twenty five to thirty years. However, a different perspective came to light, pun intended, while reading about the Theory of Relativity tonight. Is all light equal? In the past, I have been led to believe that all light is equal in speed: 670,616,629 Miles Per Hour (MPH).

However, all light is not equal with the Light of Christ! The Light of Christ is the purest, brightest and certainly fastest light in existence. When you submit every ounce of mass, constituting your heart, soul and mind to the Light of Christ; your energy will magnify. This submission enables Christ to exponentially increase your mass, just as he increased the mass of the fish and bread when feeding the crowds of 4,000 and 5,000 men plus the women and children.

Submitting your mass for increase then multiplied by the Light of Christ will result in amazing, miraculous energy? E=mc2 produces energy uplifting and building the Kingdom of God beyond human understanding and power.

Energy = mass*Christ (Light of the World) > Energy = mass*speed of light2

Fueling Guest's Transportation

Genesis 24:32 “So the man went to the house and the camels were unloaded. Straw and fodder were brought for the camels, and water for him and his men to wash their feet.

As I was reading this passage this morning before leaving for church; the Lord asked, “Rick, when special guests visit your home; do you fill their car with fuel?” Instantly, I acknowledged I had failed to provide a full tank of gas for guests to my home. This is something that is neither offered nor expected.

We read of food provided for camels and horses throughout history. Why is this practice discontinued with petroleum generated transportation? In the days of camels and horses, available livestock feed was often sparse; while gas and diesel are readily available at nearby convenient stores today.

One can easily argue the same is true of food and lodging, numerous restaurants and hotels exist near most of today’s residences; yet we continue the practice of feeding and lodging our guests.

The next time you or I am visited by a special guest, should we rush to fill their vehicle with fuel? That question is best placed before God in your prayers; then listening for his still small voice directing your thoughts and actions according to his will.

Judging

Mt. 7:1 “Do not judge, or you too will be judged.”

Frequently when driving, I get upset with other drivers; particularly the fast maniacs and the slow pokes. Of course, this is all relative to my driving the ‘perfect’ speed of three or four miles an hour over the speed limit. If only other drivers were as perfect as me! Do you share this attitude whether driving, performing a task at work, or volunteering?

I fail to consider the reason others are speeding more than I am; perhaps they are taking someone to the hospital, or hurrying to assist someone in danger. Maybe they are in deep thought; their cruise control does not work, and have no idea of their speed. A plethora or reasons exist for those speeding as well as the ‘slow pokes.’ Perhaps the ‘Slow poke,’ is returning from the hospital where a family member just passed away. Maybe they too are in deep thought or enjoying a good conversation with a passenger.

I am wrong in judging them as maniacs or slow pokes; as I do not know the reason for their chosen speed. Does this allow each of us to avoid and disregard the speed limit and rules of the road? Of course not! Driving laws and speed limits are implemented for travelers’ safety. Following them enhances our chance of traveling safely for many years.

Ultimately, I am judging the creators of the speed limit as ineffective when I intentionally speed, or encourage others to disregard the speed limit. Fortunately, the Sheriff, deputies and State Patrol are forgiving when I exceed the speed limit by 1/100th MPH or 4 MPH. However, if they continually heard me condemning others breaking the speed limit; they would give me a ticket every time I exceeded the limit.

The Bible is full of examples of Jesus, Apostles and Disciples proclaiming the “Speed Limit,” this proclamation is different than judging others. Judging others is lifting us and our sinful behavior as acceptable and theirs as condemnable.

Just as we are to avoid condemning others, we are also to avoid condemning the laws and the Creator of laws. We are to avoid intentionally living outside of the law, and encouraging others to live outside the law.

Fortunately, God through Christ’s death and resurrection forgives us every time will break his laws. However, scripture states that if we condemn others of their mistakes; he will condemn us each time we fail to live perfectly.

Jesus' Signature

Excerpt from Writings:

Do you also live in the Faith of Almighty God just as Moses and all the Godly men of the Bible did before them. The only source of real inner peace amidst death and life’s storms is Jesus Christ.

The Bible says that Jesus and the God of Moses are one in the same. It is impossible to know the God of Moses without knowing Jesus as your savior. (Jn. 5:46) Jesus is God’s spoken word, including the word made flesh. God created the heavens and earth with the spoken word. Jesus was sent from the Father for creation. The Bible says all who observe creation are without excuse. God’s word is creation!

Jesus was later sent to earth in physical form to die a humiliating and very painful death. In death, he collected and cancelled every sin ever committed by all humans in the history of the world. Consequently, he descended into hell for three days to suffer the punishment due to you and me. At the end of three days, he conquered death and hell, coming back to earthly life; he was resurrected. This allows people to be forgiven of all sins we ever commit. There is a catch!

The Father requires a signed receipt for entrance into heaven. When you accept Jesus’ invitation to acknowledge your dependence on his death and resurrection for the forgiveness of your sins, Jesus signs your heart as a receipt of forgiveness. The human heart and the Book of Life are networked together; his signature simultaneously records your name in the Book of Life.

Additionally, this eternally altering signature provides amazing peace, love, faith, hope, forgiveness of others and innumerable other benefits. When Jesus returned to heaven, he sent the Holy Spirit as a comforter. The Holy Spirit resides in the hearts of those with Jesus’ signature. The Holy Spirit provides freedom from discouragement, resentment, worry, lust and all that God the Father opposes. Unfortunately, we sometimes ignore the voice of the Holy Spirit and we mess up.

The Holy Spirit also convicts your heart, revealing your sins and your eternal death without Christ; while revealing Christ as your Savior if you acknowledge your dependence on Christ and accept his signature on your heart. The signature is on the heart, as the heart pumps your life blood, through your entire body. Consequently, imprints of Christ’s signature are dispersed through your entire body, reflecting Jesus in all that you think, say and do.

The Bible says blaspheme of the Holy Spirit is the only unforgiveable sin. Anyone who curses the Holy Spirit curses the Holy Spirit’s message of their dependence for Christ as their Savior.

Daniel Wallace accepted the Executive Director position in 2004; leaving his former Director position at a camp near Tyler, Texas. Gull Lake Ministries has had its significant challenges, but with their focused and prayerful efforts, Daniel’s committed team has seen a renewal take place in the guests, programs and finances.

Last week, I was privileged to visit my former Manhattan High cross country teammate at his Michigan family camp and conference center. I was traveling from a seminar in Lansing, MI to one in Fort Wayne, IN;

Daniel’s time was limited as 600 ladies were descending on the conference center the following morning. The ninety minutes we visited were priceless; as it is anytime one is catching up with longtime friends. We reminisced about our commitment to teamwork, giving our best and winning against odds. Daniel used to tap our sternum with his fingers, passionately saying, “You gotta want it.”

Daniel provided a tour of the magnificently picturesque Gull Lake Ministries campus, including the 52,000 sq. foot ministry center built two years ago. Donations allowed the completion to be debt free. Yes, in Michigan, a state suffering from the horrific economic downturn over the many years. Moreover, Gull Lake Ministries now enjoys healthy attendance throughout the year and a vibrant ministry serving churches, families and other non-profit organizations in this pristine lakeside setting.

Is Daniel is a great fundraiser? Contrary to secular logic, Daniel readily admits fundraising is not his passion or a great talent. Daniel’s focus is ministry! The Gull Lake Ministries’ staff assists people in attaining knowledge of Christ; and deepening their relationships with Christ once they know and believe. Focusing on fulfilling their purpose for existing has, by God’s grace, met real needs for people for over 90 years, which in turn has sustained their existence.

Daniel’s passion is to do his best to live out Matthew 6:25-34. He seeks first God’s kingdom and righteousness; knowing in faith, all else will be added to all associated with Gull Lake Ministries. Daniel and the entire Gull Lake Ministries staff readily acknowledge that any success is entirely due to Christ’s generous blessings.

Peace Beyond Understanding

Two years ago this August, I was asked to resign from my Agronomy Sales position due to effectively being too honest with customers. Monsanto sales reps chastised me for internalizing and applying Biblical principles.

A co-worker and client attempted to “show me the ropes” as they expected me to give unfair favor to the client over other clients who placed their orders first; “Rick, you don’t understand how things are done around here.” I acknowledged that they were probably right, “I do understand honesty and integrity.” They quickly shot back, “We throw honesty and integrity out the window this time of year.”

Another peer attempted to explain Biblical principles are virtually an automatic path to failure in agronomy retail sales. This was a 180 degree turn from working as a Crop Consultant for Central States Agronomics, Inc. in Kearney, NE. Owners Mark and Eileen Kottmeyer founded their business and personal lives on Biblical principles. Central States Agronomics, Inc. and its clientele demanded honesty and integrity, always.

Despite losing my position and salary, the inner peace saturated my soul. The Holy Spirit assured me that he had greater plans; plans where one does not have to hide their light under a basket. Rather letting Christ’s light illuminate in every aspect of life. In September 2009, Mark Kottmeyer during a lunch meeting, strongly suggested I attend seminary.

Where does peace originate in worldly turmoil?

When the Holy Spirit, the Comforter sent by Christ, saturates our soul; we live in Peace regardless of external circumstances. Observers are amazed of a Christian’s inner peace, when the worldly circumstances warrant severe panic and emotional turmoil.

I believe Christians, those saturated with the Holy Spirit; experience the same logic defying peace even during seemingly horrific deaths. Just as a worldly view believes the loss of job, salary and other possessions is reason for terror; so it believes horrific deaths are also terrifying. However, just as the Christian lives peacefully amidst economic turmoil, so we will be at peace in our physical deaths. O death, where is your sting?

Surrender your emotional, spiritual, and relationship turmoil the Comforter sent by Christ Jesus; the Holy Spirit.

We are absent credit for the peace enjoyed in either situation; rather give praise, honor and glory to our Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit.

Healthy Diet

I surpassed 107,000 miles of lifetime running last week, perhaps more. This originated ponderings of comments over the years; especially in regard to my diet. What is a healthy diet?

For many years, and by numerous people, I am told that my diet lacks ‘healthy’ food. Ironically, most who condemn my eating habits possess more body fat, are sick at least once, usually several times, per year. I realize there are probably some who are healthier than I am, yet my body seems to do okay.

The flu bug has conquered me four times since December 1991. With one exception in 1999, my blood pressure and cholesterol remain low. When my diet was most heavily condemned, I was 2.5% body fat; and ran over 100 weekly miles. During a two and one-half year span of heavy training, injury was avoided by prayer, belief, faith and confession of scripture.

Yet, society says I eat and live in an unhealthy manner. The obvious question: How does one define or obtain healthy food? Healthy food is like good deeds, mankind’s efforts make neither good nor bad. Food and deeds are healthy and good when submitted to Christ. Seeking and receiving Christ’s blessings on our food, creates a healthy diet; beneficial exercise and deeds.

Christ tells Peter that all food made by God is good. Unhealthy diet, exercise and deeds exist when we seek our own glory, believing our secular choices create healthy lifestyles. Years ago, many ‘experts’ including the media condemned high fat, high cholesterol diets.

Great-Aunt Ruth Douglass, my grandmother’s sister, delivered food to the shut-ins and remained active into her early 90s. Once when about 92 years old, Aunt Ruth quipped, “This eating bacon and eggs everyday and cooking with lard my whole life is sure killing me at a young age.” Her trademark smile possessed its glowing beam while speaking.

Aunt Ruth entered heaven a few weeks before her 97th birthday. What is the secret to Aunt Ruth’s heath? She requested the Lord’s blessing on her food, thoughts and deeds every day. The Lord provided her health!

Health is less about the years we live, rather the achievements garnered. Do you desire excellent health? Submit your food, thoughts and deeds to the Lord, requesting his blessing on all you eat, think and achieve.

I must go for a run! I pray the Lord blesses this and all runs, along with the food I eat and thoughts before, during and after the run. This has been the key to health and the missing factor when struggling, since my competitive running began June 1978.

Christ's Status

Last Monday, June 13th 2011, I stood in the hotel room Jacuzzi enhancing the health of my lower legs, overlooking Lake Michigan.

This is the first I recall having a Jacuzzi in the room. A welcomed addition after a ten mile run along Lake Michigan’s shore in Traverse City the previous evening; including perpetually increasing intensity. Lower leg health is vital, particularly while traveling.

During my post-morning shower whirlpool, my curiosity wondered of friends’ updated status on Facebook. My Smartphone and Bible each sat along the edge of the Jacuzzi. I glanced at the Bible, as the still small inner voice suggested I read it instead of Facebook, ashamedly I ignored this voice several times. Why do I frequently respond amazingly idiotic?

Suddenly, and softly, while internally expressing my desire to check Facebook instead of read scripture; the soft inner voice asks, “Rick, why are you indifferent of my status? Why are you ignoring my voice and direction in your life?” Wow! I felt as if I had been hit with a ton of bricks.

Are you anxious to read Christ’s daily status updates in your life? Each reading of scripture reveals deeper truths, for you. The original meaning remains constant, our understanding deepens. For example, at first glance we may see a car, television or human body.

Study of these, or anything else, continually reveals deeper information about the object. The car, television or human body are the same from first glance to in-depth study. Scripture and Jesus Christ are the same, while we learn in layers or plateaus.

Daily studying and prayer uncover greater details; additional status updates, of Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. Ask, with faithful confidence, the Holy Spirit to open and transform your heart and mind to hearing and desiring his commands expressed through Christ’s updated status.

If Christ is my best friend, if I love him with all of my heart soul and mind; I will desire to read his status in scripture and post on his wall through prayer. What about you?

Whom to Please?

I recently heard a sermon regarding the complexity of life. While life can be complex, the sermon failed to mention methods of simplification.

My friend and successful businessman, Charles, frequently states he has no reputation, or regard for reputation, outside of his relationship with Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. Charles ellaborates, saying when he is alignment with the Holy Spirit, all relationships, including his wife and his mentor; fall into place.

The Bible instructs us in the Book of Psalm to please God, not men. Yes, God's creation is full of complexity and Christ's wisdom far exceeds the cumlative wisdom of all humans past, present and future. Seeking and pleasing the world is contrary to God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Simple is not easy, yet much less stressful. Simplify your life, choose to listen to, follow and obey Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. Forget about pleasing other people. Please Christ, as you will please those he desires you please. Be prepared, for his word also says that we, like him, will be persecuted as Christians.

Invest your Time and Energy in conversation with Jesus Christ, seeking to please him. Your reputation with the Holy Spirit will be amazing!

Simplify Your Life: Internalize Scripture, Pray, Listen and record direction from the Holy Spirit. Test the direction with Scripture, including quickly forgiving those who hurt you in any way.

Simplify Your Life: Accept the Bible as the Pure Word of God.

Simplify Your Life: TRUST Christ with ALL of your Concerns and Hopes; Fears and Dreams.

Flood Waters

“A full dam provides poor flood control," Kenneth O. Kahrs.

Grandpa stated this numerous times during conversations in the 1980s and 1990s. Grandpa was in the Republican River valley in 1935, seeing the eight foot wall of water roar towards him as he assisted a neighbor and their team of horses up the hill to safety. No upstream dams existed in 1935.

Through the decades, after many dams were built in the 1950s, Grandpa saw the benefits of dams to control flood waters. These dams were initially built for two primary purposes: flood control and irrigation. Recreation and other uses were considered ‘gravy,’ or extra benefits resulting from the flood control and irrigation.

Lake levels are listed as conservation pool, and flood pool. The lake’s reservoir is considered full when water level, elevation, equals the conservation pool elevation. All water above this elevation is flood water.

For example, Harlan County Dam in Nebraska’s Conversation Pool is currently 1945.7 feet, and the Flood Pool at 1973.5. The reservoir’s current elevation reads 1947.4; the Flood Pool is filled 4.4%.

The Flood Pool’s purpose follows its name; contain flood water with a controlled downstream release. This practice reduces the vastness of a flood. The Bible says the wisdom of the wise is to give thought to their ways. Consequently, wise and prudent lake managers lower water levels much below the Conservation Pool, before flood stage is reached, if they anticipate excess upstream runoff or upstream dams are full, providing little holding capacity.

Releasing water downstream before the lake is full allows flood waters to be received without damage, while blessing those downstream. When water is contained in the Flood Pool, and flooding occur; the excess is water is a curse. Massive releases, double and tripling normal high releases, hurt people and property permanently.

One only has to view pictures of the Missouri River flooding to see the enormous damages.

The Bible teaches us to give generously and cheerfully. The top 10% of our income is considered flood stage money; we are to release it to Christ. We are encouraged to release income in addition to the 10%. This giving enables spreading Christ’s Word, worshipping Christ, while caring and providing for others around us. By hanging on to our money, failing to release the flood money, we are preparing for disaster. Excess money released apart from Christ, spent out of control, harm and permanently damages people.

Releasing the top 10% allows a flood of income to be received with gratitude, the more we release the more flooding we are able to enjoy as a blessing instead of a curse. While reservoirs capacity remains fixed; God often increases our Conversation Pool and Flood Pool. Consequently, releasing income downstream to Christ’s people increases our financial holding capacity.

The same principles hold true for Love and Forgiveness. Let the Love and Forgiveness you receive from the Lord to flow through you to those you encounter. Your capacities will increase.

Power of Associations

“People brought their sick to him and begged him to let the sick just touch the edge of his cloak, and all who touched him were healed.” Mt. 14:35-36

Wow! Does this display the power of faith and association? The clothes of Christ contain his power. Another lady was healed after 12 years of ailments after touching Jesus’ clothes. How are you dressing spiritually? Are you associating with those clothed with Christ? Are you internalizing the Word of God? Jesus is the Word made Flesh. This association will lead those hungering for Christ to seek him through you. When Christ, the Holy Spirit and the Word are internalized in you; you too will possess the healing power of Christ.

You may heal people physically. Your wisdom, advice, or vocation will heal people emotionally, spiritually and physically through a variety of facets.

Store Treasures in Heaven

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where you treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Mt. 6:19-21

A devastating tsunami hit Japan on March 11, 2011, April thru May 2011, tornados rip through numerous states including Arkansas, Alabama, Georgia, Kansas, Massachusetts and Missouri; killing hundreds while destroying billions of dollars worth of property.

This week, dam flood gates along the Missouri River are releasing record amounts of water down-stream due to a combination of poor planning and record snow and rain amounts upstream. Fortunately, I have not heard of any resulting deaths. Millions, probably billions, of dollars of property loss is rapidly occurring.

Devastating fires are destroying portions of Arizona.

These events remind us, anyone can lose all of their physical possessions, treasures, in minutes. Only by God’s grace are some of us spared. Where are your treasures stored? Are they stored in heaven? Are you placing and keeping your heart with Christ?

Storing our treasures, our hearts, with Christ in heaven does not protect us from earthly devastation. Investing in heaven, committing your life and heart to Christ, does protect your heart and soul. Christ assures us inner peace, regardless of earthly circumstances.

Christ will provide for you and your family when all hope appears vanished. Investing in heaven, Jesus Christ, enables five loaves and two fish to feed thousands of people. Those losing homes and property need food, water and shelter.

Invest in their needs; invest in their souls, invite them to church, send them a Bible. A Church full of the Holy Spirit, preaching the inerrant Word of God, will supply all of their needs, providing eternal inner peace. This eternal peace begins instantly, on earth.

Are you investing where moths, thieves, rust, fires, tornados, and flooding are absent any power over your investment? Are you investing in heaven, in ministries boldly proclaiming salvation through Christ alone?

Soil: Three Constituents – Three Phases

What are the necessary soil components for maximum root growth and productivity? Jesus uses parables of the sower and soil to illustrate spiritual growth. The three constituents of soil are sand, silt and clay. Loam is formed when the middle texture of constitutes 60% to 90%+, while sand and clay are nearly evenly represented in the remaining structure.

Silt loam, clay loam and sandy loam soils producing amazing yields, as they allow root penetration, active soil microbes, nutrient and water holding capacity.

Soil also has three phases: solid, liquid, and air. The proper balance is necessary for maximum growth and productivity.

Spiritual roots, growth and productivity also require worshipping God in three: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Denying the Father is like denying the solid phase of soil, the Son like the liquid, and the Holy Spirit as the air.

Those claiming God only exists as the Father deny the clay and silt; as well as the water and air within a soil. Worship God in Trinity: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; your spiritual growth, roots and productivity will be amazing.

Light & Germination

Mt. 5:14,16 “You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. (v.16) In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.”

Velvet leaf and Shatter cane seeds are capable of surviving in the soil for up to fifty (50) years. These seeds will germinate when exposed to sunlight for a fraction of a second. Sunlight exposure is sometimes made possible by any type of tillage, for as little as 1/1000 second.

Germination leads to growth and emergence. The soul’s seed of salvation awaits exposure to Christ’s light. Light, and moisture from the waters of our baptism, produce germination and abundant growth.

Just like plant seeds, the exposure necessary for germination may only be 1/1000 second. Will your light be under a bowl when tillage of someone’s heart exposes their seed? Will they miss the opportunity for exposure to the light of Christ? ‘Tillage’ may include physical, emotional or spiritual challenges; or realizing there is “something more” to life.

Christ’s light radiates through us in a variety of formats: generosity of money, food, physical assistance, listening and many more too numerous to mention. Your financial support of a ministry may enable someone in the dark to experience and grow in the light of Christ. Seek the Lord’s wisdom and guidance in shining your light of good deeds.

Your light shines as you internalize scripture, continually converse with Christ, seek the Holy Spirit’s guidance; including the Wisdom, Knowledge and Understanding necessary to achieve Christ’s will for your life.

You may be the exposure to the light of Christ someone has been awaiting after 50+ years of darkness. Serve Christ; keep your light fully illuminated, always!

Submitting to the Sword

Ephesians 6:17 “Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”

As an agronomist, I would pull out my Buck pocket knife to dig in the soil searching for newly planted seeds. The abrasive soil slowly dulled the once razor sharp blade. Similarly, a crooked or flimsy knife blade is absent value and earned confidence. Would you confidently approach a task requiring precise, clean cuts with such a knife? I too would lack notable assurance of accurate work.

Yet, frequently I hear those studying the Holy Bible attempt to drag the sword of the Spirit, the word of God through abrasive dirt. Further attempting to bend and twist the sword’s blade in an effort of avoiding cutting out their favorite beliefs and activities.

One church bishop denounced using scripture as a weapon. I don’t know about you, when my opinions contradict with scripture; my opinions are wrong. Attempts at altering the sword include, but not limited to: “Jesus is one of many routes to salvation,” “The Bible is out of date regarding divorce, marriage and sexuality.”

However, man has no power over God’s word, the sword of the Spirit. Even if we bend, twist and cause it to be flimsy in our mind; this sword remains straight and razor sharp from eternity past to eternity future, alpha and omega. This consistency benefits sinners submitted to Christ for forgiveness and salvation.

Anything parallel to the sword remains safe and uncut. Only those things out of alignment with scripture, the sword of the Spirit, will be cut and removed. The sword of the Spirit is the word of God, Jesus is the word made flesh; Jesus is the sword of the Spirit made flesh.

Submitting ourselves to Christ allows his light to fully illuminate our life, enabling confession and repentance of our sins to him. This allows permanent removal of these thoughts, words and actions by Christ the sword.

Removal of our sin by the sword of the Spirit purifies us before the Father. This removal is only possible with a razor sharp, straight, firm sword. Dodging the sword of the Spirit is dodging confession and repentance. Yes, the sword does inflict pain at times; however the pain of removal of sin and enhancement of righteousness is exponentially eternally worth it.

Just as patient undergoing surgery for the removal of deadly cancer tumors requires healing, we sometime require healing after the sword of the Spirit removes deadly thought, words, actions and habits from our life.

When facing the sword of the Spirit, Jesus Christ the word made flesh, we either respond with “I am Redeemed,” or “I am Offended.” The redeemed are released from their sin; healed and renewed in their relationship with the Father. The offended are cut by the sword of the Spirit, yet refusing submission for healing, redemption and renewal.

Submit yourself to Christ, the sword of the Spirit made flesh; for removal of sin and healing and renewal of your soul.

You have not, because you ask not. Ask and you shall receive.

At the beginning of each seminar, I encourage the attendees to let me know of anything they hope to attain from the seminar. This invitation and inquisition is repeated several times throughout the day.

Frequently, someone assures they will gladly share any apparent uncovered material with me; yet these very people stay silent through the final request.

The evaluation sheets are distributed to each attendee. A few of these silent attendees write on their evaluation forms of their disgruntlement of material failing to be covered in their desired format.

Yes, they ignore the inquisitions; remaining silent, illustrating their false promise of speaking up, with each probing. They then freely and openly complain on the evaluation form; they believe they lacked a brochure promise yet refrain from asking.

While cooling down from today’s run, the Lord reminds me that me and many others virtually always do the same with him. He specifically invites us to ask him of anything in His name.

We either fail to ask or fail to align our request(s) with His name. We then complain to anybody and everybody about our lack of receiving.

If our omniscient, all knowing, Lord seeks our requests; is it permissible for me to inquire in the seminar room? He has used this experience to teach us that just as I, a sinner, am sincere in these inquisitions; the perfect, almighty God is exponentially more authentic in His invitation of our requests.

If you believe you and I lack a Biblical promise let us inquire if we are asking congruently with scripture. Perhaps we lack the wisdom to recognize the Biblical promise, perhaps the Lord delivered in a format different than expected.

No one expected Jesus to be born in a feed trough inside a livestock lean to. Jesus entered and occupied the world with humility and wisdom; yet the world expects great things to exist with brash complication.

We lack, because we fail to ask and observe with Christ’s wisdom. Ask ye shall receive!

Panic

Have ever been in an instant and severe panic? A few moments of go, such panic struck like lightening. I was returning to my motel room, walking across the parking lot, with clean clothes after completing laundry in Salem, Oregon. As I approached the entrance, my mind shifted from deep thoughts to, “why is the third parking space north of the entrance now empty?”

My rented Jeep was no longer where I last parked. How could this happen? Parking, locking and pulling the keys instantly replayed in my mind. Did someone break into my room and steal the keys to steal the vehicle? I must call 911 and the car rental company. How did this happen!? I anxiously approached my room to door to open, enter and investigate.

Another moment of panic, my room number changed and I was locked out. Glancing ahead, I quickly and embarrassingly realized I had entered too soon. My vehicle and room were still as they were last left. Thinking deeply and being up 23 ½ hours the previous day while speaking and traveling can result in a loss of focus.

I entered the room, looked out the window at the vehicle; my heart rate rapidly descended. A still, quiet voice spoke in the silence saying that this is the same type of panic is realized by those who fail to recognize Christ as their Savior. Those who fail to recognize and accept Christ as the Word made flesh, a member of the Triune God, who is also the one and only God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Their panic will be exponentially worst and remain eternally.

Believing a vehicle stolen causes a tremendous initial panic. Are you helping people avoid the great eternal panic in answering the great commission in making disciples of all nations; baptizing them in the name of Jesus? Each of us is called to different roles in this commission. Seek the Lord’s wisdom, knowledge and understanding to fulfill your role on his team. Avoid the panic!

I stood in the seminar room explaining the ‘M’ on a table in the workbook stood for “Month.” The attendees and I discussed the significance of defining variables, symbols and acronym in effective communication for two or three minutes. We then moved on to the next topic when the lady who had been disruptive all day; asked the meaning and definition of ‘M.’ I politely repeated for the fifth or sixth time, that it stood for “Month.” Fortunately our Lord occupied and controlled my tongue; allowing me to speak with patience and mercy.

Initially, despite remaining outwardly calm; internal turmoil steadily increased. Previously, Mary (not her real name) admitted to being distracted with activities at work while attending the seminar. Suddenly, the Holy Spirit reminded me that his communication with me strongly resembled my communication with Mary.
Frequently, Christ speaks to me and others. The others quickly capture the message, even though our Lord graciously repeats the message five, six or even one hundred times. In my busyness, worrying about other activities, I miss his voice. Later, I anxiously and annoyingly demand the Lord speak to my heart; explain what is going on and why. Christ and the Holy Spirit, softly, kindly and patiently repeat the message yet again until I get my mind off of activities, focusing on my surroundings.

What about you? Are you listening? Do you get frustrated when the Lord “fails to provide the answers,” only to realize Christ has been speaking while you were focused on distractions? Are you receiving Christ’s message delivered through those whom seemingly annoy you.

We are designed with one mouth, two ears and two eyes. Most events include at least two sides of the story to observe and hear. Let us hear and see Christ in the world both directly and indirectly, using an eye and ear for each. Let Christ’s voice and illumination enter and occupy both sides of our heart and mind.

Seek Christ occupy your tongue, speaking through you.

Forgiveness

When Jesus taught the disciples how to pray, he included: Forgive me of my mistakes, sins, as I forgive those who make mistakes, sins, against me.

At times in life I have been less than forgiving than at other times. For the most part; if someone sincerely apologizes, I am quick to forgive and ready to move forward. Forgiveness is forgiveness, let us forget the past to enjoy the present and future.

Jesus listened and spoke to the criminal on the Cross, once the criminal acknowledged his dependence on Jesus and asked Jesus to remember him; Jesus quickly stated: Today, you will with me in Paradise. Jesus held no 'grudges.'

Do you find it interesting that Jesus avoided lecturing the criminal on his past mistakes? Jesus granted the criminal's request for forgiveness and joining Jesus; because the criminal recognized, confessed and repented of his mistakes.

When Jesus visited with the woman at the well, he verified her past actions; he forgave her. The Bible does not record Jesus lecturing the woman on the wrongs of her promiscuity. She was already aware of her wrongs, she turned away from her past mistakes; the Lord knew her heart. Once again, Jesus did not hold any 'grudge' against this woman.

Are we as good as Jesus at forgiving others? Probably not. Yet, we can ask Jesus who resides in us, to saturate our hearts and minds with his love and forgiveness; including the ability to love and forgive others.

Are you, like me, most easily able to quickly and wholly forgive others when you recognize your need and acceptance of Jesus forgiving you? The next time someone seeks forgiveness for hurting you; consider how you prefer Jesus to forgive you.

If Jesus does not lecture after confession and repentance, holding no 'grudges,' should we hold a 'grudge'?

Forgive others, as you want Jesus to forgive you.

Your Total Is...

I was checking out at a local store today, after ringing up a few items the register clerk said, "Your total is $3.94." I responded, "Thanks for letting me know;" then turned to leave the store with my newly acquired items. Had I continued, I would have been charged with shoplifting, I would have been a criminal!

I quickly turned to see their puzzled face as I grinned saying, "Oh, I suppose you want me to pay that amount." We both enjoyed bountiful laughter! I was having fun, and was interested in their reaction; I shop regularly in this store.

As we travel through Lent, towards Easter; we are reminded of Jesus saying, "Your total for your sins is MY LIFE." Unlike checking out at stores, we are able to say "Thank You," receiving eternal life from God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We are unable to pay this bill. Jesus Christ represents how God turns the world upside down from human logic. The "criminal" in God's view, are those who attempt to pay their bill to him.

Next time a store clerk at the register informs you of your total amount due; remember in Christ's Kingdom you are able to turn saying, "Thank You," turning and walking with Jesus.

To be clear, while on earth, remember to pay the clerks here the amount due. We do not want you charged with shoplifting. :)

Are you Moving Mountains?

Mt 25:25 “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.”

Have you ever been really hungry? Between working on the farm and running; I have been extraordinarily hungry numerous times in life. At times I become light headed, and consequently grumpy. Other times, thirst has overwhelmed my throat. A fresh cool drink is amazingly refreshing! Yet, in a few hours, sometimes sooner; I am hungry and thirsty again.

Have you, like me, ever experienced internal turmoil due to the loss of a loved one? Perhaps the turmoil is finances, or professional or relational. Do you feel sick from loneliness? The only cure is Jesus Christ, whether in worship, prayer, other Christians, or scripture. Only the Word made flesh, and the Holy Spirit he brings, is able to fulfill the hunger and thirst of internal turmoil.

As my friend Chuck Kahl elaborately illustrates, faith the size of a mustard seed is able to move mountains in the lives of others. Are we sharing our physical, emotional and financial resources as guided in our hearts by the Holy Spirit? Are we sharing the ‘Bread of Life’?

Are we moving mountains in the lives of others? Are we showing others how their mountain of sin is removed with confession and repentance; accepting Jesus’ death and resurrection as the reconciliation of the past, present and future sin? In John 6:35 Jesus says, “He who comes to me will never go hungry,…”

Are we feeding others with the ‘Bread of Life’ and the water permanently quenching thirst: Jesus Christ? Are we moving the mountain of an empty life, an empty soul; feeding our enemy (Romans 12:20) with the ‘Bread of Life’?

Are we showing others how to be clothed in the righteousness of Jesus Christ? Are we inviting others to Worship, Bible Study, and prayer requests? Are we visiting those who have no hope and sharing the Hope of Jesus Christ?

Caring for someone’s physical needs before their spiritual needs, is equal to spraying water on the leaves of plants. It may clean their leaves, creating a refreshing appearance, while providing little long term benefit. The leaves will then shine as a result.

Just as we must water the soil, allowing plant roots to uptake nutrients and water; we must also feed and water the soul of our neighbors with the ‘Bread of Life’ found in Jesus Christ. With Jesus in the soil of their soul, at the foundation of their life; they too will shine. They will shine with the light of Christ.

In faith, share the Good News of eternal life through salvation from Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection. Your faith will move their mountains of internal turmoil, hopelessness, hungering soul, doubt and loneliness, along with all other problems of lives absent Christ.

Jesus will say: Well done thou good and faithful servant!

Does Faith Move Mountains?

Matthew 17:20: Jesus replied, “Because you have so little faith. I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”

This past weekend, I had the pleasure of visiting a good friend and his family in Indianapolis, IN while traveling on business. Chuck (Charles J.) Kahl and I worked together at a Kearney, NE laboratory in the mid-1990s. As usual we engaged in discussing ideas, admittedly some better than others. These ideas include our Christian faith; ultimately every good and meaningful idea is founded on Christ. Seek the foundation of all ideas in discerning good and bad.

During this weekend’s discussion, Chuck shared a revelation he received while preparing a Sunday School lesson for second graders at the perish he attends. Do you ever hear lessons and wonder why you had not previously thought of it yourself, because it is so simple? Have you noticed the Holy Spirit’s wisdom simplifies the complex? Do you give credit of ideas to the Holy Spirit and to the person he spoke to? The Bible, thus the Holy Spirit, does; I will do the same!

Charles J. Kahl, a Sydney, Nebraska native farmer, said the Lord revealed to him that moving mountains included moving mountains in the lives of others. If someone has a $100 mountain in their life, and the Lord places on your heart the desire to remove their mountain with your $100; then your faith moved their mountain. Their faith is also involved in confessing the mountain and accepting the $100. Does pride ever resist our acceptance of mountain moving gifts?

Perhaps someone’s mountain is emotional or spiritual. Perhaps the mountain is physical assistance. The Bible clearly states, “Faith without action is dead.” Activate your faith in the lives of those around you, in the lives the Lord places on your heart. Say to their mountain, “Move from here to there.” Can moving a mountain include leveling the mountain? Does moving a mountain include forming a tunnel through the middle like the Eisenhower tunnel on Interstate 70 through the Colorado Rocky Mountains?

Listen to and obey the Holy Spirit as he directs your Faith filled words and resulting actions in moving and eliminating mountains. Should we begin in the same manner as Chuck Kahl? Let’s think like a second grader, simplifying our faith; accepting Jesus’ commands.

I pray the Lord reveals mountains for your faith to move in the lives surrounding you. Your mountain moving faith may involve a phone call, a visit, dropping off a meal, picking up someone’s tab at a restaurant, sending a check, giving a helpful hand, an encouraging word¸ or sharing a business opportunity.

What ideas are you discussing with your friends? Are you simplifying them to the 2nd grade level? Second grade simplification will enable all on Christ's foundation to be possible. Yes, second graders and mustard seeds are small!

Evil and Fear have existed since nearly the beginning of time. Peace exists in relationship with Jesus, knowing (accepting) his Power and Salvation.

World Peace is Christ's presence and influence in the entire World. When someone engages in a conversation regarding "World Peace," inquire of steps to share the Good News and Hope of Salvation through Jesus Christ.

Only in Christ, does true Peace reside.

Power of Speech

As a child, I LOVED to hunt; anything and everything. The adventure and relationships of hunting, including the excitement of spending time with my dad, cousins, and friends filled my mind. Consequently, I frequently spoke about hunting. The more I thought and spoke of hunting the more excited I became to begin the next adventure. Our thoughts and resulting words are powerful.

The Bible is full of stories and examples of the Power of God the Father's and Jesus's spoken Words. Jesus is the "Word made Flesh." When Jesus and the Holy Spirit occupy our hearts and minds, they concurrently occupy our speech, our spoken words. The heart and mind conjure thoughts and command the tongue.

To deny the Power of our Speech, is to deny Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit's presence in our hearts and minds. Conversely, acknowledging their presence in our hearts and minds, acknowledges their presence and power in our speech / words.

Open your heart and mind to Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit; relenquish control of your heart, mind and tongue. Think about the adventures and relationships. Speak Christ's power, expect Christ's power in your spoken commands.

CEO - Workers - Union

Many years ago, the owner of an extremely large business told his workers (employees) that everything in the company was at their disposal, except for one thing. A few days later the Union Boss stopped by to check on these non-Union Workers. They explained how wonderful the business owner / CEO treated them; and how everything, except one thing, was accessible to them anytime, anywhere they desired.

The Union Boss latched on to the idea of the workers having one thing limited from their enjoyment. He told the workers, the business owner was being unfair and trying limit their rightful wages. The Union Boss explained to the workers that they deserved this item that was kept from them.

They reminded the Union Boss that the owner graciously gave them everything else. Eventually the Union Boss convinced the workers the "off limits" item was good for them. He convinced them to stand up to the business owner / CEO and tell him they deserved everything. The Union Boss then convinced the workers to begin enjoying their rightful new property immediately. "What is it going to hurt?" They agreed!

Eve ate the Apple, followed by Adam. The Union Boss rejoiced as sin entered the world. The business owner, God, was devastated and kicked his workers out of the best work environment in the history of the world. This awesome environment is never to exist on earth again. Was the business owner out of line? I pray you say 'no.'

Visualize

In the early 1980s, people looked at you as if you were very weird when speaking of preparing through visualization. Congo began instructing us to engage in this powerful technique to program our mind for success. He taught that our mind is unable to tell the difference between a real and imagined event. Interestingly, he received very low grades in Psychology courses at Kansas State. Perhaps his answers were correct!

We were to lay in bed two nights before every race, visualizing the upcoming race. First, we are to see ourselves arriving at the meet, in our meet sweats and uniforms; then unload from the bus with calmness and confidence. We continued visualizing warming-up, and lining up at the starting line maintaining our calm, confident attitude. Congo then instructed us to visualize racing the course to the best of our ability, including half mile and mile splits. This was followed by a strong finish, running through the finish line, exerting all of our available effort on that day. He explained how this enabled us to arrive and race with confidence, absent nervousness; since we had successfully ran the race in our mind.

The Bible says, as a man thinks in heart, in his inner belief, so is he. Congo intuitively taught us to implement Biblical success principles. Visualizing is etching one’s desires on the stone of your heart and mind. Etching in your heart and mind, like etching in physical stone, is virtually permanent, due the commitment; and requires great effort. It is impossible for a double minded person to etch in either stone or using visualization. When Jesus sent the Comforter, the Holy Spirit, God’s law became written on our hearts. These writings on the heart influence our every thought and consequential words and actions. Similarly, visualizing our goals, internalizing them by etching on our hearts and minds; influences our every thought.

What are you visualizing? Are you visualizing success in correlation with scripture? Are you beginning to understand the damaging effects of visualizing any thought or activity in disagreement with the Bible?

Where do love and good works originate? I receive e-mails from a church body that continually brags of their good works in the world. Their leaders concurrently confess that all receive salvation from Christ regardless if they know and accept him as their Savior.

Their gospel has changed from Christ’s death and resurrection to preaching the necessity of works. One pastor recently told me that he only views a few books of the Bible as relevant. It is difficult to have effective hands and feet while absent arms and legs.

Yes, we should do good things, including caring and providing for our fellow man; whether those in our household, across the street or around the world. The second greatest commandment is loving your neighbor (fellow man) as much as you love yourself.

Where do we receive the motivation for loving others, caring for others, assisting, feeding, clothing and visiting others? Jesus said these will be considered when separating the sheep and goats. The gospel we preach reveals where we believe these actions originate.

Those who believe the actions are externally motivated, preach a gospel of works. Those believing a relationship with Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit are necessary for salvation, preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. As we have discussed in previous writings, Jesus and the Word are the same; as Jesus is pure and a pure Word; with reciprocal also true.

Allowing the transformation our hearts, minds and souls to Jesus Christ through the purity of the entire scripture; enables our actions, our works, to be led by the Holy Spirit. Would you agree the Holy Spirit’s wisdom of necessary actions far exceed our own wisdom for appropriate actions?

Lord, help us continually deepen our relationship with you; saturate our hearts and minds with Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. Enable us to clearly hear and obey your voice, your directives in serving, acting and helping others. Help us lead others to you, so they may develop and deepen their relationship with you.

Jesus, YOU are the change the world seeks and needs. Jesus, and the Holy Spirit have been present along with the Father throughout eternity. Genesis speaks of the Trinity, Jesus is revealed throughout the Old Testament. All of Scripture is God breathed, Jesus is the Word made Flesh. Consequently, ALL of Scripture should be considered "Gospel", Good News. Failing to see Good News in Scripture is a reflection of my sinful nature; as opposed to any deficiences of the author of scripture.

Where is Your value?

Have you noticed the "I'm Offended Foundation" has virtually the same membership as the "How Great I Am" club?

When our value rests in Christ, we sing "How Great though Art"; since nothing over powers Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit, it is impossible to be "Offended" with Jesus in our hearts.

As my friend Chuck quips, we know we are losing focus when "How Great thou Art" becomes, "How Great I Am." All spiritual forces can over power us when we are Self reliant. Consquently, we are easily "Offended."

Place your Heart and Trust in Christ Jesus singing "How Great Thou Art", you will never again join the membership of the "I'm Offended Foundation."

When citizens pray to Christless Government, Christless Government preys on citizens.

A structure praises its foundation: Anything of Christ, Praises Christ!

If it seems too Good to be True, it is probably from Christ. All things are Possible through Christ who Strengthens us. Are there greater gifts than: Salvation, Healing, Forgiveness, Mercy, Love, Faith, Hope, Peace, Health, Family, and Friends?

If it seems too Bad to be True, it is probably from Oppressors. Seek Christ, Love and Forgive the Oppressors.

Are we in Control?

Do you ever have those moments when you believe that you are in control of your life? Do you ever think you have "all the answers?"

Do you ever encounter others who pontificate on how they have planned out their life! Perhaps continuing on about how they are in control, because they KNOW everything, they can make just about anything happen they desire.

Perhaps others nag you for the "answers" regarding your life and circumstances. Have you been around those who are relentless for an answer even after you admit to having limited understanding of various events. The limited understandings often include, "Why did this occur?"

May be you are tough on yourself when you are unable to verbalize of the "Why's?" in your life.

Next time you encounter someone who seemingly has it "all figured out," believing they are in control of life; whether youself or someone else; inquire of their plans for earthly arrival and departure.

If they are suicidal that is a whole other issue, they need help NOW.

These inquisitions should remind each of us that while we do bear responsibility, there is much of life out of our control; good and ugly. When submitting to God, it is all good and beyond our understanding.

Terrorist in America

Recently one of the Terrorist from 'Club Gittmo' (as defined by Rush) was tried in the U.S. courts instead of military courts. The Obama regime is a proponent of moving these trials from military to civilian courts in New York. The news on the radio reported that the terrorist is now jailed in the United States prison system.

This may seem fine and non-consequential, however every or at least most outgoing U.S. Presidents have granted Presidential pardons to those in prison immediately before the President leaves office.

Considering Obama avoids using the word "Terrorist," including refusing to refer to the Ft. Hood shooter as such; and Obama supports the muslim brotherhood leading protests in Egypt; will B. Hussein Obama grant the Presidential Pardon to U.S. imprisoned terrorists upon leaving office in January 2013 or January 2017?

Is this the primary motivation behind moving the trials to civilian court?

Fortunately, our Lord Jesus Christ is fully capable of protecting us from any and all harm. We must submit to Christ, confessing and repenting our sins as referenced in one of my June 2009 blogs. The Bible says that every knee shall bow at the name of Jesus, this includes you and I; as well as muslims, members of the ACLU and all who ignore or deny Christ.

Customer Service boils down to Serving Christ in Assisting Your Customer Achieve Christ's Will for their Life; while You Achieve Christ's Will for Your Life.

Customer Service is loving your fellow man, your customers, as much as you love yourself. Does this sound like the second greatest commandment? Do you desire the success of your customer as much as you desire your success?

Believe it or not, I encounter a few who believe this definition is too 'Basic.' They obviously lack understanding the depth of extending Christ's love and extending that love to our customers.

When we love others with Christ's love, we will be patient, and kind. We will refer them to others when appropriate. We will attentively listen. We will act as quickly and accurately as possible. We will be humble and caring.

Grudges and Forgiveness

Several years ago, a friend and I were discussing forgiveness; particularly forgiving ourselves and others with past wrongs. The sins, or mistakes, varied in degree. We then rhetorically asked whether God forgives us or anyone else when humble ourselves before Him; acknowledging our wrongs, seeking His forgiveness and repenting or turning from that action. According to scripture, God casts my sin and your sin as far as the east is from the west. According to my math, that is a long ways away!

When God throws our sins as far as the east is from the west, He is not playing ‘fetch’ like we do with a dog. Yet, some of us keep going to the far ends of east and west to retrieve our forgiven sins; and while there often pick up and return with the forgiven sins of others. The secular media are champions retrievers!

My friend and I reminded each other that Jesus said that we are forgiven as we forgive others. Uh Oh – better be careful. Let’s give this some thought. The Lord’s forgiveness is final to Him; once He forgives and throws it as far as the east is from the west; our sin is erased in His mind. Consequently, if we are saturated and led by the Holy Spirit; we too will recognize full forgiveness of repented sins; whether our own or others.

There is only one God, existing in Trinity. As Jesus said, a house divided can not stand. God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit is absent double talk. Once God forgives, the Holy Spirit also recognizes the sin as forgiven. If I fail to recognize the sin as forgiven; I am being led by my sinful nature instead of Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit he sent to comforter and convict us. Conviction leads us to repentence.

Let us confess our sin, repent or turn from our sin, accept forgiveness through Jesus Christ, and recognize the forgiveness of others as we do in ourselves.

GOALS - Realistic is on Your Knees

As an eight year old, I stood by the old windmill tower in our farmyard setting five major GOALS. Four of them involved athletics, the other was a large business GOAL. I was a terrible athlete, always among the last to be picked for playground teams. In School Day races, I finished in or near last place - I was consistent!

When I share these GOALS, both at the time and later; many responded, "Get a reality check, Rick!" or "Rick, effective GOALS must be realistic; you need to change yours to something achievable."

I defied the advice, keeping my GOALS. I achieved the first four GOALS 8, 9, 20, and 21 years after setting "unrealistic" GOALS in June 1975. I was frequently on my knees pleading for our Lord's assistance. I continue daily working towards the 5th GOAL; most likely some still believe it to be "unrealistic." I remain on my knees seeking the Lord with all my heart, soul and mind. Upon reflection, I believe God was providing a vision for my life back in '75.

On the way to speaking engagement in November 2009, I stopped by the farm which was enroute to my destination. As I pondered the accomplished GOALS, I reflected upon how enonormous and 'out of reach' they seemed in 1975. However, as I set pondering on the river bank 34+ years later; I asked myself why I did failed to set even greater GOALS at the time. Yes, I have continued setting GOALS since.

The Holy Spirit softly spoke to me that November 2009 day on the banks of the North Fork of the Solomon River, "Rick, your GOALS were and are realistic; when you maintain you sole focus and reliance on ME. Yes, they are unrealistic for you to achieve on your own. That is why in June 1975 I placed GOALS on your heart that were insurmountable for you; to guide you to seeking and relying on me."

Yes, GOAL is Greatness Occurs After Leaping (on Faith) or Greatness Occurs After Logic (human reason).

Others will most likely say that you need to get a reality check; you need to set more realistic GOALS. When this occurs, consider our God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit places GOALS on your heart and mind that are Realistic. Realistic when place in His hands!

This is why I invite and encourage those I speak to and work with to set GOALS whose achievements are dependent upon being on our knees seeking and relying on God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Expect God's Intervention! Expect Miracles!

As my dad said in our last meaningful conversation, "Always trust God, always remember that son, trust God (Christ) always." I will dad, I will.

When something seems to good to be True, it is probably God!

Does Jesus Christ dying for your sins sound too good to be true? Satan and his band of demons certainly try to convince that it is "Too good to be True."

Have you pondered "Impossible"?

Frequently we say, "That is impossible!" Someone often replies, "All things are possible through Christ who strengthens us" or "With God, nothing is impossible."

What is Impossible? "Impossible" simply means the lack of wisdom, knowledge, understanding and strength. God is Wisdom, Knowledge, Understanding and Strength. Consequently he never lacks, allowing all things to be possible.

He enables us to achieve the impossible by either temporarily opening the gates of "impossible" for us; or gifting us the appropriate Wisdom, Knowledge and Understanding for achievement.

We will expound more on this at a later time.

Did you remember Grade School music class? I recall a class exercise in about fourth grade; we listened to an orchestra recording on an album. If you are under thirty years of age, you probably lack personal experience with an album. As we listened, we were to identify each musical instrument as it played in the orchestra; whether cello, violin, trumpet, flute or perhaps cymbals.

Concurrent lessons involved gaining an understanding and appreciation of the separate orchestra components; while acquiring the distinct sound waves generated by each. The same orchestra originates the music for listener types. Certainly some study the motives and backgrounds of the music composures.

A non-intended benefit of this exercise is engaging and improving one’s imagination; picturing the orchestra playing with contributions from a plethora of individuals and their unique instruments. An orchestra is a compilation of instruments producing a synergetic resonance.

Did this exercise change the sound waves contacting our ear drums, penetrating our brains for recognition? As long as everyone listens to same orchestra and only that orchestra; the sound waves remains constant despite increased recognition and appreciation.

The listener’s emotions, pre or post identifying the separate components, are capable of an equal roller coaster ride. The greater knowledge does increase depth of understanding while the message remains constant.

Does an orchestra have anything to do with scripture? Like an orchestra, understanding the detailed compilation and background of the composures or authors increases the depth of knowledge and appreciation of scripture.

Just as one lacking academic knowledge of an orchestra is able to benefit from excellent music; one lacking academic knowledge of scripture benefits and grows from scripture. The message and the Word remain unchanged despite our intellectual abilities.

We must each listen to the same orchestra for the same music; similarly must each listen to the Holy Spirit for acquiring the same pure Word through.

As my grandfather, and many others, used to say, “Our Word is our Worth.” To expand this equation, consider our salvation, our life, resides in Christ the Word made flesh.

Equivocally, “Our Word” equals Christ and “Worth” equals life. Therefore “Our Word is our Worth” equivocates “Christ is our Life,” or "Christ is our Salvation."

The Father, Son and Holy Spirit are the Spirit of Truth, it is impossible for Christ to lie. One may continue the equation saying, “Truth is our Life,” "Truth is our Salvation."

Consider this before giving your Word!

To be a CHAMPION, we must THINK, PREPARE, and RESPOND as a CHAMPION!

CHAMPIONS focus on ACHIEVEMENT.

What is my Desired destination? What type of person passes through this destination? What attributes, or characteristics, do these achievers possess? What attributes do these achievers purge, delete, from their lives? What attributes I currently possess?

Which necessary attributes, or characteristics, do I need to acquire? Which of my current attributes do I need to strengthen? Which of my current attributes do I need to delete from my operating system?

How do I obtain, delete, and strengthen the appropriate attributes?

CHAMPIONS accept ridicule from others as an element of their journey.

Why do we receive ridicule? CHAMPIONSHIPS require THINKING differently than others. As the Bible illustrates in Proverbs 23:7, “As he thinks in his heart, so is he.” We are a product of our thoughts.

Ridicule derives from one’s thoughts, a lack of understanding while also lacking the desire to understand CHAMPIONS’ thoughts. Some mock what they do not understand! Why do some mock God? They lack any degree of understanding of God; they lack wisdom: “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline” (Proverbs 1:7). Certainly, no one completely understands God; some have received more wisdom than others. Proverbs 2:6 declares, “For the Lord gives wisdom, and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding;” we must “search for it as for hidden treasure” (Proverbs 2:4).

Suppose you absolutely knew a gold mine existed somewhere on a section of land you owned, 640 acres or one square mile. How long would you search for the gold mine? Would you quit after a month, six months, five years, or even 25 years? No! You would keep searching until you found the gold mine. Once found, you would continue digging, and mining all the gold possible from the mine. This same intensity and perseverance is required for mining wisdom, knowledge, understanding, and insight.

A CHAMPION digs deep into their soul in search of their gold mine of greatness, digging into the depths of their body and mind conquering unknown frontiers created within them. In Jeremiah, God says, “I knew you before I formed you in the womb.” God placed greatness within each of us long before our physical bodies existed. We find this greatness in seeking fellowship with God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit with every ounce of energy we possess. He will reveal the doors to open, the paths to travel, and the keys to unlock our potential. Once unlocked, our potential is exponentially transformed into greatness. This greatness is only possible as a conduit of the Holy Spirit, submitting to obedience of our Heavenly Father.

Submitting to Christ requires challenging obedience and discipline. Included among these attributes are: the removal of limits. “With God, nothing is impossible.” God’s possibilities and wisdom are infinite. His word established creation. All boundaries are a fence built by him. He owns everything. If a rancher builds a fence creating a bordered pasture, yet owns the prairie on all sides of the pasture, he has the ability to remove the fence, expand the pasture if he desires. God may also expand the ‘pasture’ of possibilities; he may splice the fence to allow the temporary expansion of earthly possibilities, as he did with Elijah in the chariot to heaven.

The expansion of earthly possibilities permitted Lazarus’ return from death. This also illustrates Christ’s ability to raise anyone from apparent hopeless situations.

Expanding our thoughts requires great effort. Breaking ground, whether soil, physical, or mental digging in new territory. Breaking sod require greater horsepower than tilling previously broken ground. Developing physical fitness induces pain as our bodies increase their ability to achieve. Similarly is using the left hand for a right-handed person. We engage different neurons and muscles, requiring mental concentration to fire the synapse on new paths. This is also why articulating, either writing or speaking, new ideas is fatiguing.

We effectively express cogitable ideas, those grasped by the mind. Grasping involves enveloping an object or idea. Our hands only grasp those objects within a certain proportion to our hand size. My small hands prevent me from ‘palming’ a basketball, or accurately throwing a regulation football. Those with bigger hands easily palm and basketball. My friend Dean once welcomed NFL quarterback legend Joe Thiemann onto stage before a keynote speech. Afterwards, Dean commented on Joe’s enormous hands. His comparatively large hands enabled Joe to grasp the football, and accurately throw, deliver, or distribute, the ball anywhere on the football field.

Our minds, our thought process, must expand in proportion to the size of an idea; enabling us to grasp the idea with our minds before we are able to accurately distribute, or deliver, to an array of personalities and backgrounds in our audience. The audience may be listening to our keynotes or seminars; or they may represent our peers, colleagues, or families. Cogitation enables accurate, varied deliverance of ideas.

Recently a friend commented on the large quantity of sleep and food his teenage son required; along with the amount, his son is growing. His son’s physical growth necessitates immense energy. Intellectual expansion also requires great energy.

Muscle memory, establishing paths of neuron travel, allows for habits including fast running. Establishing mental neuron travel enhances rapid, critical thinking. Lyle Claussen continually states, “If you want to run fast, you have to run fast.” Equivalently, if we want to think quickly, deeply, and broadly: we must think quickly, deeply, and broadly. Repetition establishes cerebral neuron paths. Just a smooth, well-defined road with consistent traffic improves travel efficiency, so we improve mental efficiency with a smooth, well-defined neuron path with consistent thoughts of depth, and breadth.

Imagination development is directly related to mental progression. Imagination is a mental ‘muscle.’ The more we imagine, the greater efficiency and detail oriented we become. Imagination enhances cogitating ideas. Once conceived we then imagine the idea visually, rotating the idea in four and five dimensions with in our minds. Time and spirituality are the fourth and fifth dimension. The spirituality dimension allows us to think beyond ourselves, and our limitations. How does this idea correlate with scripture? If so, which ones? Is this idea a proponent of the two greatest commandments? If so, how? Are there any negative side effects of this idea? Do the benefits outweigh the risks: physically, mentally, and spiritually, both immediately and in another century?

Visualizing an idea is literally mentally grasping the idea, because we are enveloping the idea with in the boundaries of our minds. An idea we are unable to fully visualize, see in our mind’s eye, rotating multi-dimensional is not yet grasped. The greater our imagination, the greater is our ability and efficiency to grasp new ideas. Grasping precedes fully capitalizing on the idea.

Returning to the analogy of the quarterback: he may be able to see and deliver to one open receiver. The quarterback’s value increases as his ability to see and deliver to multiple receivers. Our values exponentially increases with our ability to see and deliver additional possibilities with grasped ideas, mentally enveloped in our minds hand made by our creator.

When imagining, inclusion of all five senses strengthens results. Perhaps we commence with the visual image, followed by sound, smell, touch, and taste. We are now empowered mentally to live, the idea! Living an idea permits the accumulation of experience, at least cerebral. Experience facilitates advancement of conceptual depth and breadth. A communicator’s responsibility is simplifying the idea for the audience. Genius is simplifying the complex! We simplify cogitable ideas.

When the aforementioned gold mine is found, we then must extract and package the gold for the jewelry market. Once gold is adequately packaged for marketing, the potential customer base expands exponentially to include millions of people. The gold mine of our minds is the same. Once we package ideas cogitable to the masses, our customer base also expands exponentially. The Holy Spirit sends prepackaged cogitable ideas.

Trust the Lord's Calculations

Proverbs 3:5 – 7 “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and shun evil.”

Do you remember chemistry or physics courses in school? Often times the method by which the correct answer was derived made no sense. Simple math failed to solve the equation. Often in chemistry and physics equations, one had to know and properly use constants, such as the speed of gravitation acceleration of 9.81 meters per second per second. A commonly used constant in chemistry is Avogadro’s number of 6.023 x 1023 particles /g. atom. We could continue on with a variety of constants and factors used for advanced calculations.

Those that use these and other constants and other factors every day, the calculations appear as “common sense.” I am told that Beta Sig alumnus and world renowned Professor of Chemical Engineering at Kansas State, Dr. Larry Erickson is able calculate extreme advanced equations in his mind. To assure proper perspective, one of his undergraduate students told of an assignment where the calculation endured for 40 minutes in Microsoft Excel. These equations epitomize complexity!

Most of us, at least this author, would compare the raw data with the final product, uttering this does not make sense. Am I the only one whose mind is boggled from these and even simpler complex equations? My mind does not currently possess the wisdom to comprehend and calculate those equations. Are the final products wrong based on my lack of understanding and inability to successfully complete these calculations? Absurd!!!

Of course, they answer, the calculated products are right once calculated properly whether me or anyone else besides the person making the calculations understands. Yet, how often do we hear people, claim the Bible does not make sense simply because we lack the ability to comprehend? How often do we claim God’s ways, his voice in our life, cannot be true because the product is beyond our understanding and ability to calculate how we are transformed from where we are to where God is placing us?

Does God use constants in his equations of which we are unaware? Does Avogadro’s number change or cease to exist based on someone’s intellectual capacity? Equally, God’s constants remain regardless of our human understanding. Jesus Christ, the word made flesh, who is one and the same as the Father, alpha and omega, states that he is, “The same yesterday, today and tomorrow.”

The triune God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit may speak to you directly or indirectly; revealing awesome plans for you; lying beyond our comprehension. Believe!!! Christ’s calculations containing the eternal Wisdom, Knowledge and Understanding of Creation; involve constants beyond the cumulative of human understanding.

Leaning on our own understanding or wisdom instead of Christ’s Wisdom, Knowledge and Understanding while fearing him, results in foolishness leading to failure. These amazing constants and complex calculations are why we are to trust and fear him. As we acknowledge his advance calculating ability, he will make our paths straight; even when the math does not add up.

Depends on How Good You Want to Be

One September morning in high school, I ambled into the cross country coach’s (Congo) office. He was sitting in his office grading papers or going over workouts for the upcoming day. This shy, bow legged, transfer student was scared and nervous as I made my way through this new school. The class size exceeded six times the size of the old school and forty times larger than the grade school I had attended while growing up on the farm.

Upon entering the office of this coaching legend I blurted out my inquiry, “Do I need to be running in the morning?” We were already running intense, tortuous workouts during the afternoon practices. Workouts causing pain in the legs climbing up and down the stairs during the day, in addition to feeling sick every evening.

His response was simple, yet not what I had anticipated nor desired “Depends on how good you want to be Rick Meyer”. Congo’s lack of a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ reply frustrated me. As a teenager I reflected upon this response throughout the day as I sat in class. However, when awakened by the alarm clock performing its assigned duty the next morning, I was quickly out the door running. I did have the desire to be as good as possible. In fact, twenty plus years later, I continue to run in the morning regularly. Those dark winter mornings when the mercury is well below zero, I still reflect upon Congo’s response “Depends on how good you want to be Rick Meyer” as I head out the door for yet another run.

The challenge, “Depends on how good you want to be”, provided an opportunity for an array of lessons for my teenage mind. This is a question we should ask ourselves everyday.

• Should we invest extra time and effort to benefit our family, friends, clients, and employees or board of directors whether it be building relationships or synthesizing a report?

• Do we need to make the extra phone call to secure the appointment or contract?

• Is the extra practice on our upcoming oral reports and presentations necessary?

• Should we make the extra effort to assist and encourage our spouse and/or children?

Depends on how good you want to be ……

What is Your CEC?

I asked this question of athletes, future All-Americans, the week leading up to the NCAA championships. Their initial reaction was most likely very similar to yours right now. What is CEC? What does CEC have to do with human performance and being competitive internationally?

The simple answer - Everything!

My introduction to CEC came in “Kindergarten Soils” as agronomy professors often refer to “Introduction to Soils”. CEC (Cation Exchange Capacity) and AEC (Anion Exchange Capacity) were topics of discussion concerning soil chemistry. Cations, properly pronounced cat-īön, are positively charged ions. Anions are negatively charged ions. Ions are atoms or groups of atoms electrically charged because of the loss or gain of electrons, negative charges.

In simplistic terms, CEC quantifies the amount of nutrients one particle of soil can attain. The higher the CEC, the better the more productive the soil, there is more food available in the soil for the growing crops or vegetation.

Clay soils typically have the highest CEC, there physical properties allow for this. In the interest of space and maintaining your interest, we will quickly discuss a few physical properties of clay. Clay is adaptable, sculptors use clay. Clay soils have the greatest amount of pore space, allowing for greater available water storage. If we equate water with opportunity, clay soils capitalize on the greatest amount of opportunity as it presents itself.
Silt, Sand and Rock are not flexible enough to mold easily. These larger particles claim, ‘this is the way I am, if you do not like it, too bad’. Change requires excessive heat, pressure or force. Their large pore size allows water to easily run thru it, if we are like stones, we are inadaptable, allowing opportunity to run right by us.

Running fast on a cross country course, expanding your business or keeping up with your family activities, also requires a high CEC.

This CEC is Champ-ion Exchange Capacity!
Having a high, CEC (Champ-ion Exchange Capacity) requires us to shed ‘negative’ charges from our lives, positively charged.

What is your capacity for the mental attributes of being a champion in business, in life?
Do you have drive to go the “extra five miles” for your clients, friends and family?
Do you have the fortitude to persevere when your mind and body are begging for relief? The power to keep your word and stay true to your convictions when you may temporarily enjoy record profits simply by ignoring your convictions or going back on your word.

Do you have the capacity to frame pain, whether mental, physical, financial or relational, properly? The champion views pain as an encourager rather than a deterrent. Pain is viewed as a positive force, the greater the pain the fewer competitors, therefore the greater the reward upon completion of the task.

As Christians we should inquire our CEC also, Christian Exchange Capacity. What is our ability, individually and collectively the Christian message of Hope, Forgiveness, Accountability, and Love?

VISION: Go the Extra FIVE miles

“Are you crazy?” inquired the man digging out his vehicle keys.

“YES!” –I answered to this accusation, one of many times over the past four decades.
(This accusation is virtually always a sign of being on the path towards great success.)

“No one should be outside in this weather, much less running speed workouts”; replied the heavily dressed concerned citizen.

Many times this past winter I have trained in inclement weather. Most folks asking are those who care, and yet they lack the understanding of what drives a champion to train in deep snow or double-digit below zero temperatures.

Occasionally, I find myself reflecting upon a run on New Year’s Day 1995. A 20-mile run was scheduled. However, the temperature was 5 below zero with the wind-chill 25 to 30 below zero. Additionally, the depth of the un-cleared snow exceeded the top of my knees! My initial reaction was to decrease the run to 15 miles. After all, it was miserable outside and New Year’s Day – both good excuses – right?

Some suggested I not run at all. However, since my first hunch was to decrease the run 5 miles, I chose to increase the run 5 miles. Gratification was tremendous when I completed the 25-mile run in miserable and painful conditions.

“How do you do it?” ask those who seek to understand. Several factors led to what many consider insane behavior.

One powerful factor is vision. A vision is rich in its minute details involving all five senses. In addition to seeing the vision, one must hear, smell, feel and taste everything imaginable with the vision. An effective vision enables laser focus and to tenaciously keep at it.

An effective vision generates emotions including laughter, tears, even shivers down the spine. Your mind cannot tell the difference between a real and imagined event. With an effective vision, your performance hinges upon your desire to create the reality of your vision. This means you either, go for that you have imagined, or you choose to avoid temporary discomfort - neglecting your vision.

What is your vision? Your dreams will perish without a vision! With an effective vision, (in any endeavor) you will pass the complacent who travel only the ‘extra mile’. With Vision you will traverse the extra FIVE miles, a 500% increase in performance generated by your effective vision.

Be ready, you may be asked “Are you crazy?” Only if being on the path toward great success means you are crazy. Keep your Vision on Christ!

Was the earth created in six days, with the seventh as a day of rest? I have firmly believed in the six days of creation, and certainly resting on the seventh day. Is it a coincidence that as more of society works absent a day of rest, the number of physical and mental illnesses increases? Our bodies and minds are designed to optimize with a day of rest! That is another discussion for writing.

What does the Bible say about Creation? First let’s agree that God is the creator. Genesis 1:1 “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” Dr. Gerald L. Schroeder in his book, “The Hidden Face of God: How Science Reveals the Ultimate Truth” defines the Hebrew word Be’reasheet can mean “in the beginning of,” but not “in the beginning.” The Aramaic recognizes Be’reasheet as a compound word: Be’ means “with” while reasheet means “first wisdom.” Consequently the Aramaic translation says, “With wisdom God created the heavens and the earth.”

Let us agree with certainty that God created all with his wisdom! Believe it or not, Christ’s wisdom dwarfs the wisdom of scientists and bishops. In the first day, God created light calling it day, then separated the light from dark; calling the dark, night. The second day God created the sky. Now the third day, he creates land, and the seas. He continues producing vegetation and enabling the plants to reproduce.

To summarize the first three days, God creates light, sky, land, seas and vegetation.

The sun, moon and stars are created in the fourth day to govern the day and the night. This is the twenty-four hour day that we reference. How long were the first three days before the sun, moon and stars were created? I do not know! Is it possible they are longer than 24 hours since the first three days are not governed by the sun and moon? Could this assist in explaining the discrepancy of Biblical time versus Geological time?

Creation originated from God’s wisdom, this wisdom makes the cumulative of man’s wisdom look ridiculous. What is possible with God’s Wisdom? As stated, I claim no answers; rather Biblical based questions to expand our thoughts. All thoughts are to be filtered with scripture; flaws revealed by discrepancies, are not flaws of scripture; rather man’s wisdom.

“With wisdom God created the heavens and the earth.”

Water Under a Bridge

"That is water under the bridge." How many times have you heard or uttered this statement? Metaphorically it refers to a past event, there is no turning around, changing the events or repercussions; it is time to move on.

However, this is different than forgiveness! That water is still in the river, still to be found if one moves downstream.

Forgiveness is water under the bridge, down the river, out to sea and evaporated. In other words, that water can no longer be found. Those molecules are separated as far as the East is from the West; which is how the Bible describes God scattering our forgiven sins.

Yes, evaporation is mandatory for your sins and the sins others committed against you. While God scatters our sin as far is the East is from the West, the media and others with evil desires will search the entire river and sea for your sins "under the bridge" if doing so profits them or their friends.

Next time someone harms you physically, emotionally or spiritually go beyond saying it is "water under the bridge." Tell them the water is "under the bridge, out to sea and evaporated; permanently removed and disassembled!"

If you want to run fast... ~ Lyle Claussen

“If you want to run fast, you have to run fast.” The words were spoken often by hall of fame coach Lyle Claussen. Additionally, Lyle emphasized running slow, and running a moderate pace. To become good, one needed to vary their mileage and pace.

For example, on Sunday’s before or after church I often joined the UNK (University of Nebraska-Kearney) cross country team for their weekly long run of 14 to 16 miles around 6:00 to 7:00 minute pace. I later increased my mileage to 20 to 28; running with them either the first or last 16 miles helped significantly. These runs were intended as a ‘recovery run,’ exerting a relaxing effort. Although, too often ‘relaxing’ dropped off the pace around 15 to 20 miles; leaving us to run without it the remainder of the journey.

Monday’s workout consisted of running an up-tempo 10-miler; usually under 5:30 pace, with some miles under 5:00. On Tuesday’s we ran some sort of interval workout such as 10 x 1,000 meters; these were fast and tough, with little rest between each. Afterwards, we ran strides to increase our leg speed, our raw speed.
Another day was a moderate run of under 6:00 pace, and another interval workout during the week before the guys raced on Saturday. Each day varied in workout and intensity, the workouts often varied from week to week. Variance created strength, speed and flexibility. Yes, we stretched after each run! Yes, these guys became very good, among the best collegiate teams in America!

How are you becoming good? Are you determined to be among the best in America? Are you varying your mileage and pace? You are probably saying wait a minute, I am neither runner nor desire to run. That is acceptable! However, are you varying your topics of study? Do you read a variety of topics, written in a variety of depths?

This morning, in the past couple of hours, I have read an Opera Magazine, about 100 pages of a book on Adolph Hitler and various portions of scripture. I am not a fan of Opera, but for some unknown reason to me I receive the magazine. At first, I discarded due to lack of interest, I now read to learn a new topic, expanded vocabulary, and new writing styles. How do I become a better writer, if new frontiers remain unexplored? Each of these materials expands my thought process, challenge and validates my beliefs.

Difficulty of believing horrific reality originates in reading of Hitler’s antics and mentality. Yes, even though most of us are aware of many of his evil actions and directives; this book provides additional depth into his demonic nature. Why read this horror? Human nature is the same eternity past, present and future. Many of illustrated that we either learn from history or repeat history. This history should never be repeated!

Another belief challenge is reading the Grace, Love and Mercy of our Heavenly Father and His Son, Jesus Christ. If ever a “too good to be true” existed; Christ’s death and resurrection for our salvation is it. Fortunately, all is True! Christ did die and conquer death for our sins, you and I can believe, confess and proclaim this Good News. The real message behind, “If it seems to good to be true…” is our inquisition of motive. Christ and salvation are true because of God’s desire for us to join him in eternal life. The Bible is clear: All things are possible through Christ who strengthens us.

Life’s propositions that seem to good to be true are a lie because they originated from an evil heart. Satan is the father of lies and deception. When opportunities are too good to be true, the motives are deception; and a wrongful harvest of gain. Someone wants to run fast, without running fast; rather to run fast because someone else ran fast.

Alter, your cerebral workouts, challenge your mind with new topics and vocabulary. Just as runner continually seeks greater speed and strength; seek greater depth and breadth of Wisdom, Knowledge and Understanding. Perform ‘strides’ to increase your mental quickness in resolving issues, your raw mental speed.

Deep Water Purposes

“The purposes of a man’s heart are deep waters, but a man of understanding draws them out.” Proverbs 20:5

Have you had strong purposes in your heart, but are unable to articulate those purposes or maybe you are unsure how to achieve or implement the purpose(s). As we visited about yesterday, deep waters can be dark, murky and/or stale. These dark waters often contain algae, mud, fauna and whatever else, hampering the clarity of our purposes, lack of clarity hinders fully defining the purposes. When our purposes are hidden in deep waters, we are frustrated in expecting the greatness, while the uncertainty remains.

The Bible, the pure Word of God, says a man of understanding is able to draw out our purposes. Who are men of understanding? They are men (and women) in your life who are in the Word, praying, fellowshipping with other believers, and worshipping our Lord. They set-up pumps, through conversation, that draw and filter your deep waters, your deep thoughts. The murkiness and residue of doubt, complacency and whatever else are removed; light illuminates your purified water, displaying your clarified purposes.

Find a friend of understanding, draw out your purposes from deep water; clarifying them to achieve God’s Will for your life.

Transpiration

Are you familiar with the term, “Transpiration?” Transpiration is when water, which is brought up by the roots, is released from the plant into the atmosphere; through the plant’s stomata. The stomata cells in plants allow for the release of gasses, including water from the plant. The drier the surrounding air, the greater the rate of transpiration. Similarly, transpiration decreases with greater humidity.

My old Soil Physics book states most crop plants use less than 10% of the water uptake for direct vegetative or grain production. The other 90% to 99% is released into the air surrounding the plant, as well as the entire atmosphere.

Transpired water is water held in the soil profile after getting there either as groundwater, rain or irrigation. The water is drawn up by the plant roots into the plant where a portion is used for photosynthesis, as well enabling the plant to stand up and its leaves to reach out. In drought conditions the atmosphere is asking for more water than the plant is taking in from the soil, the plant protects itself, enter self preservation mode, by curling its leaves and closing its stomata.

Additionally, once the soil water becomes too low; this water is no longer available for uptake into the plant. The plant is deprived of growing, producing and giving to the atmosphere.

Consider God is created everything, using the same Wisdom for all of creation; we are able gain great insight of God in examining his creation. Scripture states that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. This affords us confidence in knowing God’s love, mercy, grace, forgiveness, and laws of creation and the universe are constant; even if they are beyond our comprehension.

We have discussed how Christ the Rock is transformed into our productive soil, and deep, loam soil allows for the best water and nutrient holding capacity. We have visited about our need and benefit of being rooted in the soil, life generating substance, of Christ. What are we able to learn from the plants growing and producing on these soils?

Daily uptake of our Baptismal water through prayer, scripture (The Word), fellowship and worship enables us to stand up and reach out. We, like the plant, should take up enough additional water that we give away 90% of our Spirit Filled enthusiasm, love, mercy, grace, and forgiveness to the world around us. We too, like the plants, begin closing up to the world, enter self preservation mode, giving away less; when demand exceeds uptake. We, like the plants are unable to uptake this water once the water levels are present but too low.

Our ground water is our relationship with Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. Our rain water is prayer, devotion, and the Word. Our irrigation is worship and fellowship. If our soil water supply lacks, our productivity and generosity will be depleted.

Attain water, uptake water, produce and give. Share the Good News of Jesus Christ this Christmas and all year long!

Fountain of Wisdom

The Words of a man's mouth are deep waters, but the fountain of Wisdom is a bubbling brook. (Proverbs 19:3)

We sat around a table while reading, studying and discussing specific Bible passages. State and National church leaders, with their human insight, believed certain passages of scripture were outdated. Their arguments were filled with human logic, leading to some to agree that scripture is unclear, that it scripture is full of gray areas.

Using their line of reasoning, they were correct. Any discussion of scripture centered on man’s words, man’s logic will be unclear. Proverbs illustrates the words of a man’s (or woman’s) mouth are deep waters. Have you ever been in deep water? What is deep water like, what are the characteristics of deep water? Deep water in ponds, lakes and streams is dark, murky, and stale. One is best to avoid drinking out of this deep water. Moreover, it is difficult to achieve much in deep water due to the lack of light; and the murky water. No wonder we are challenged to understand, study, or discuss scripture using man’s words, man’s logic.

Conversely, what are the characteristics of water in a bubbling brook? This water is clear, fresh, life giving, and drinkable. The sound of bubbling brook is refreshing and relaxing. One can easily see through the water of a bubbling brook; as light shines in and through. This is scripture’s comparison to the fountain of Wisdom. Studying, reading and discussing scripture while open and submitted to Christ’s Wisdom is refreshing, fulfilling, and enlightening. Our minds and hearts are able to understand and implement God’s word when received from the fountain of Holy Wisdom.

We receive this fountain of Wisdom by asking for it from God. The Bible says if you want wisdom, ask and believe you will receive. With Wisdom our eyes and heart are opened, the waters of scripture are clear; the gray is removed.

During harvest, farmers haul their grain in a truck either to a local elevator or to their own bins for storage. Before storing the grain’s moisture is checked; wet grain will not store long without spoilage. Dryers are sometimes used to dry out the grain in the bin until optimal moisture is reached.

The elevator probes the grain while the truck is on the scales getting weighed. The probe allows grain to be sucked from the truck into the office where moisture, and test weight are measured. Test weight is the weight of one bushel of grain, it measures the grain density. The higher the density, or test weight, the better. In addition to moisture and test weight, the grain is also checked for foreign material and insects; both are bad.

If all numbers are good, the manager or attendee directs the truck driver, with a green light, to dump the accepted grain. If the numbers are bad, the manager rejects the load of grain as it the grain is unfit for storage. Poor numbers lead to multiple factors of and methods of spoilage if left unresolved. Good, wholesome, grain may be stored for years if properly managed, the grain is stable and nutritious.

God tells us we are to accept His Words and store up His Commands in our bodies, and our hearts. Only good, wholesome, Words may accepted and stored; just like grain. God’s word, scripture, is stable and nutritious. Just like grain, it’s content remains the same; however with study we keep finding new uses and benefits of grain and Word.

If His word lacked purity, we would reject it like we reject poor grain; at the very least we would not store in our body and heart. Our body is the temple of the Holy Spirit. Is wisdom found in storing poor products in this temple? Absolutely not! Knowing we are to accept and store the Word in our hearts and the temple of the Holy Spirit, our body, assures us of the Word’s quality and stability.

As you read and study scripture, God’s Word, give your heart, body, mind and soul the green light for accepting and storing the Word and commands of Christ – the Word made Flesh.

Deep Soils

Are you familiar with the expression, “Adversity builds character”? There are numerous metaphors explaining the benefits of life’s hardships. In God’s creation, the deepest soils are in the valley. Deep soils are often productive soils. Roots are able to proliferate in deep soils, usually deep soils are loam, the ideal soils for water and nutrient capacity, as well root growth and expansion. Conversely, the shallowest soils are often found on slopes. Plants, including their roots, have increased competition on the slopes as there is less soil in a defined area; plants are also in competition for sunlight on slopes.

How does this apply to life? When we traverse through the valley, are roots expand increasing our ability to fully utilize the waters of our Baptism. Increased root depth and prime soil allow greater nutrient uptake as well; we are better prepared to receive the Bread of Life in Christ when in the valley. Additionally, greater root proliferation increases our stability.

Conversely, when we rise out of the valley, the roots have limited growth due to shallow soil. Competition for light increases; we are less stable. Without proper planning, soil and nutrient erosion occurs on the slopes, less water permeates the soil. A good conservation plan increases retained soil, nutrients and moisture on the slopes. What is your conservation plan while enjoying life’s success climb? How are you going to increase retention of your faith in Christ, of your dependence on His strength, grace and mercy? In a field, crop residue is beneficial for retention. Residue is generally proportional to yield. Are you keeping your faith residue in your heart to prevent erosion during success?

Residue exists in such things as scripture, devotions, prayer, fellowship and worship.

When in life’s Valley, be thankful for the deep soil. Let your roots grow deep and broad; allow them to fully proliferate to maximize water and nutrient uptake. Keep the ‘residue’ in your heart as it will protect your faith from eroding when climbing out of the valley, encountering shallow soil on your way to great success. This residue will preserve your faith in Christ, your dependence on His strength, grace and mercy!

You're Getting There...

“You’re Getting There…”

As Lyle and I run north on Kearney’s 2nd Avenue near 27th Street, he utters his frequently recurring encouraging message, “You’re getting there!” ‘There’ was in shape to run the upcoming Boston Marathon, still months away. Each time hearing this, my mind wonders, “Will I ever arrive? Will I ever be ready?” I set the goal of running, and “placing high” in the Boston Marathon as an eight year old in 1975.

The training consisted of running 70 – 90 miles per week, including 20 to 25 miles every Sunday, either before or after church. Running everyday in Nebraska necessitates enduring temperature ranges from -350 F to 1180 F, absent wind-chill or heat index adjustments. This is a 153 degree temperature variance, much larger if figuring wind-chill and heat index. Additionally, one endures the full gamut of weather conditions from blizzard to severe thunderstorms. The terrain toppings vary from deep snow, ice, mud and dust; negotiating each with traction, strength and balance.

Some claim wind-chill, heat index, footing, and storm conditions have little effect on those running or working outside. Did you hear about the guy who says his cattle never get out; he doesn’t have cattle. Similarly those denying weather’s effect on the body are not outside for long periods of time in extreme conditions.

Even though April 17, 1995 was firmly marked on the calendar, there was no guarantee that my condition would ‘arrive,’ that I would be ready to run optimally in the world’s premiere annual marathon; second in overall prestige only to the Olympics. I trained in faith, belief and trust of Christ and his specifically chosen coach for me, Lyle Claussen.

With my internalized vision and Lyle’s reminding me that I am “getting there,” my training continued through miserable weather, sore muscles, missed social opportunities, tired mind and hungry body. Frequently, I was sick to my stomach at the end of runs; mentally and physically exhausted. Collapsing in the street following a long, hard run was a common occurrence.

These agonies and inconveniences were an expected and necessary part of the journey. The road to being a good marathoner bypasses ‘Comfortville’. In fact, meaningful achievements are eternally absent in ‘Comfortville’. The greater the achievement(s) sought the further one must reside from ‘Comfortville.’ Can you imagine the reaction of other runners, if would have only engaged in a light jog each day, yet expecting to run a fast marathon? Any experienced runner would have laughed hysterically.

Pursuing great achievement of Christ’s will for our life will require equal, if not greater, training and consequential challenges of training our body and mind for running. Is there a greater achievement than Christ’s will for your life? No! Are we willing to endure severe testing of our body and mind? Are we willing for our faith to be tested to the point that we collapse on our knees? Are we willing to be mentally and physically exhausted in our pursuits? Are we willing to be sick to our stomachs as we wonder if it is all “worth it?” We expect this in athletics. Do we expect the pain in pursuing Christ’s desires for our life? At times athletics and Christ’s desires for us are the same.

Are you allowing your faith to be challenged to point of utter physical and mental exhaustion? Is your faith training, like marathon training, causing you to miss various social opportunities? Just like marathon training, achieving Christ’s will for your life will require avoiding ‘Comfortville.’

The Wednesday night before the Boston Marathon, while eating at Kearney’s Spaghetti Shop, Lyle Claussen leaned forward whispering, “You’re ready!” Shivers of excitement exploded up and down my spine. How I had longed for those words. Even though I made one mistake during the Boston Marathon, causing dehydration, I still achieved my goal of placing among the top ten Americans. Yes, I was victorious in achieving a goal set as an eight year old in June 1975.

Avoiding ‘Comfortville’ while training enabled me to visit ‘Victoryville’ in racing!

Continue focusing on achieving Christ’s will for your life, enduring all of the resulting exhaustion and pain; avoid ‘Comfortville.’ One day, our Savior will lean forward whispering, “You’re ready!” Because you avoided ‘Comfortville’ in faith; you will be welcomed with open arms into ‘Victoryville.’

Where are you Rooted?

“So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.” Colossians 2:6-7

Plants visibly display a great deal about their roots’ environment, although not always initially. Plants rooted in acid, or alkaline soils produce visible signs of poor health; as do plants rooted in soils lacking adequate appropriate nutrients. Often times the soil environment inhibits appropriate nutrients from being available, in proper form, to the plants. Other times soils are infested with fauna such as rootworm, cutworm, wireworm or nematodes. These pests result in plants with poor health; as they destroying roots to grow and expand in mass.

Healthy, highly productive plants have healthy, massive roots in ideal soil environment. The soils are either free of pests, or the soils and the new roots contain pesticides to eliminate root killing pests. Productive soils are pH neutral, enhancing the availability of required soil nutrients; additionally productive soils have adequate nutrition for maximum yields. Plants with rooted in productive soil are richly colored, with sturdy stalks which prevent wavering, leaning or lodging in severe storms. Plants rooted in highly productive soils, produce high yields!

Their tap root is able to grow to significant depths for plant stability, secondary and fibrous roots aide stability while enabling significant water and nutrient uptake. However it is imperative to recognize that different genetic lines produce different types of roots. Visible positive plant health develops along various times lines for the various genetic lines. The ultimate measure of a plant’s root environment and consequential health is at harvest. Some plants may look tremendous, until their stalks lodge from a delayed harvest.

Where are you rooted? Are you placing your roots in acidic and alkaline soils, where nutrition is limited? Are you placing your roots in pest infested soil where pests destroy your roots, preventing adequate water and nutrient uptake and stability?

Are your roots trying to penetrate compacted soil? This soil is often good soil suffering from too much traffic on it. Your soil may feel like too people have running over you, taking you for granted. The best remedy for compacted soil is water, whether rain or irrigation. If your roots are unable to penetrate for stability and nutrient uptake due to compaction; you need to call upon your waters of baptism in Christ, the water in the Blood of Christ shed for you and the forgiveness of YOUR sins.

Do you desire an abundant life, a life with a high yield? Remember, high yield crops vary in appearance during the growing season. For a High Yield Life, place your roots with Christ in God. Roots placed with Christ will provide stability with a deep tap root; the secondary and fibrous roots will uptake abundant water and nutrition found in the Bread of Life and Water from which we will never again thirst. With roots in Christ, you will not lean, lodge or break off in life’s severe storms. Christ’s love, mercy, and forgiveness is the pesticide eliminating all pests seeking to limit and kill your roots.

Seed Purity

Would you purchase seeds of your desired plants contaminated with weed seed?

What is a “weed”? A weed is a plant out of place, an undesired plant in that field. Weed seeds mixed in with the desired seed, produce a mess; a bunch of undesired plants in the field. Weeds are unsightly, while also damaging to the intended crop. Weeds consume water, nutrients and sunlight; lessening the volume of each component for your desired crop. Weeds reduce yield, and if left uncheck will eventually take over a field, making it virtually impossible for the desired crop to grow. In Matthew 13:24-30, 36-43, Jesus explains that at harvest, the weeds are gathered, bundled and burned. In 13:41 Jesus also explains that weeds cause sin and must be removed before they reduce yield.

Now with a brief back ground on the disastrous effects from weeds, let’s consider the initial question again. Would you purchase seed containing weed seed? Good, neither will I.

The seed industry includes purity on the tag of a bag of seed. The top seed companies establish 99.5% purity as industry standards; anything less pure results in consumer avoidance. Farmers desire pure seed!

Do Christians desire pure seed? Do we desire the pure Word of God? Yes! The evidence is revealed in church membership shifts. In recent years, membership has grown in churches who acknowledge scripture as the pure Word of God, while declining in churches who doubt the purity of God’s Word, the purity of scripture. The church with leaders dispelling the purity of God’s Word; are “selling” contaminated seed. In proclaiming the impurity of scripture, God's Word, they are dispersing seed containing significant weed seed. This weed seed causes sin, reducing yield. Christians desiring profitable crops avoid planting this seed, just like good farmers; they want contaminated seed kept off their farms.

The best crop yields begin with planting pure seed in your fields. The best life yields with Christ, begin with planting the Pure Word of God in your heart, soul and mind. Seek and plant pure seed, the pure Word of God!

Tilling our Minds

As an agronomy, soil and water, student at Kansas State University, one of the required courses was Soil Genesis and Classification; the class was nearly evenly split between graduate and undergraduate students. Throughout the semester, what I referred to as the “regular season,” my course grades were average. I particularly struggled with Soil Classification, the naming of soils based upon physical and chemical properties. I struggled to grasp the full concept; I understood most of classifying a soil, but not all. I understood each component, yet was unable accurately assemble the components into a workable solution. My soil classification homework scores were in the 30% - 40% range; not exactly on the Rhodes Scholar watch list.

This struggle was similar to the time I overhauled a four-barrel carburetor; when the carburetor was back on the vehicle, parts remained in the bucket. Obviously I was much more efficient than Ford Motors. Ha ha!

I continued studying the classification section; as well as the step by step guide separate from the text book. The course final was a 200 point final, with an ‘A,’ I would receive a ‘B’ for an overall course grade. After numerous times of reading the books and course notes, I decided it was time for a run this December evening. I through on my running clothes and shoes; running in a nice cool breeze of approximately -40oF wind-chill. The actual temperature ranged between -25oF and -30oF. Fraternity brothers called me crazy. Whenever I am deemed crazy, and my actions are moral and ethical, I know I am on the right track.

Fortunately, much of my body quickly went numb from the arctic weather conditions. During the little 5-miler my subconscious continued tilling the soil classification material. Sometime in the final mile, mental flood lights illuminated the soil genesis and classification material. This illumination enabled me to identify all of the components and their proper arrangement.

The following day I entered the final exam with confidence, it was the third comprehensive final of the day. As our class of approximately 12 students waited for the professor to arrive, one of girls seeking her Master’s degree proclaimed her self-assessed academic superiority simply because she attained her bachelor’s degree at Penn State. As the comprehensive exam was handed out, we were instructed of the time allotted for completion. By the end of two hours, most others, including the Penn State alumnae, were done; leaving to enjoy Christmas break or prepare for additional finals. During the exam, I thought as deeply as I ever in the class room as I had up to that time. After three hours, only two or three of us remained, the professor ordered pizza roughly 30 minutes later for us to enjoy upon completion. Upon completing the exam and eating pizza with the professor and a couple of classmates, I was as exhausted as finishing a championship race, a mental exhaustion later equaled in international marathons.

A day or two later, I stopped by Throckmorton Hall on the Kansas State University campus; anxious to see my exam results To my delight and surprise I received nearly a perfect score on the comprehensive exam; the highest score in the class. Why did I excel on this exam while struggling during the ‘regular season’ and in other much less demanding courses? I fully engaged my brain; expanding and challenging the depth and breadth of my thinking; fully tilling the course material. Why did I fail to equally engage in other topics, or sooner in this course? As Henry Ford properly assesses, thinking is the hardest of all work!

Conversely, Adolph Hitler once observed that it is the good fortune of rulers that most people do not think.

Are you mentally exhausted after solving a difficult challenge? The deeper, more in-depth, we think the greater the mental energy demand. We can easily rattle off menial ideas off the top of our minds, however deeply tilling into our minds requires great effort! As my friend Kent has stated numerous times, “Rick, you do not apply yourself in the classroom.”

Did you know tilling soil increases exponentially with depth? The same is true with tilling our minds!

Another consideration while view the increased effort to till and think deeply is the energy requirement for a rotary hoe is roughly 2.5X than required to plow an equal depth or volume of soil. Plowing, whether soil or information, is simply turning over the sod or going over the material in a reasonably thorough manner. Whereas a running a rotary hoe breaks up the soil and information into much smaller particles; mixing and understanding the contents. Are we willing to expend the necessary energy to deeply mix and comprehend all that we study, including Christ’s Wisdom, Knowledge and Understanding?

Jesus Christ created each of us, with an incredible mind designed to think deeply, mixing and understanding the contents. The required extra effort, disproportionate to increased depth; encourages us to seek Him, seek the Holy Spirit for energy, Wisdom, Knowledge and Understanding. Thinking is truly challenging work! Engage your mind, engage your faith.

Soil and Christ

How is soil formed? Soil originates from rocks, different types of rocks produce different types of soil. You are most likely asking how a boulder or even small rock becomes friable soil that sift through your hand. How do these rocks become life producing soil? Rocks become soil by biological, chemical and mechanical weathering. We will keep the details fairly simple.

Microbes, otherwise known as ‘critters,’ gradually feed away on rocks; they also create pores which allow water to enter the rock. The water slowly degrades the rock whether by running through the rock or filling the pores, then freezing. What happens to water when frozen? Your right! Water expands during the transformation from liquid to solid phase. Buried rocks slowly decompose as well as exposed rocks.

Rocks are degraded into life producing soil through persistent, minute breaking down of the particles.

The Bible has several parables regarding soil, moreover the Bible also compares the Word to a Rock. God is fully capable of growing a bumper crop on any rock, yet he chooses to do so in weathered rock, known as soil.

How do we transform the Rock of Christ into life producing soil? We have to be in the Word, in relationships, in worship; breaking down the Rock into soil. Does breaking down the Rock, destroy the Rock. The degradation simply transforms the Rock into the Life producing solution. Similarly, our breaking down the Rock, simply transforms the Word into life producing solution of our lives. Jesus does not need us anymore than He needs soil; however this is how God prefers to run the universe. No argument from me.

If you see the Rock of Christ, the Rock of Scripture, the Rock of a Congregation; yet your Relationship with Christ, your Faith is absent Growth. You need to transform the Rock into soil of your soul. This transformation requires physical, mental, emotional and spiritual effort. This transformation requires getting into the ‘nuks and crannies’ of scripture, relationships and the Word. Your involvement, combined with the Holy Spirit at work in you, will transform the Rock into Life producing soil in your life, in your soul.

We are created in God’s image, from soil. That soil is Christ!

Water Extinquishes Fire

As a member of the local Volunteer Fire Department, I have seen a number of fires extinquished. The majority of the time, we use water as the extinquisher. Sometimes water is not the best extinquisher, we then use foam. Foam is similar to bread dough, as it suffocates the fire. Water and foam puts out fires.

What about the fire of hell due all of us for our sins? If we think our sins are unworthy of hell's fire, we probably need to reevaluate our souls.

Fortunately, Jesus Christ extinquished the fire of hell for any soul, eternity past and eternity future for all who choose His water and bread as their fire extinquisher. Jesus shed His blood on the cross as He died for each of us. What is the major component of blood? Water! Jesus gave His life to extinquish our sins, He is the Bread of Life, His body represents Bread.

The Bible also discusses the signifcance of our Baptismal Water. The Holy Spirit descended on Jesus as a dove when Jesus rose from the waters of His baptism.

Considering God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit is the creator of all things, including the governing laws of the universe; it is no coincedence that water and bread protect both property and soul from fires.

Water is Life

“Seek first the Kingdom of God and all else will be added unto you.”

Have you noticed that throughout history, the great cities are built along flowing rivers and/or oceans; they are built by water? Why do cities and industry flourish along rivers, lakes and oceans? Water is life! Life, whether human, plant, animal or industry is dependent upon water. The best agricultural soils are often found in river valleys. One of my favorite hymns is “Shall we gather at the River.” As a child I heard my dad sing and whistle this song innumerable times while we were along the river; whether working, fishing, hunting, or socializing with friends on a summer Sunday afternoon.

Water transports some nutrients in the soil and in the plant; water also enables plants to stand vertical. These are a few simplified benefits of water in soil and plants. Water cleanses, water refreshes. Our blood is mostly water. Water forms valleys, as well as the consequential hills. Did you know that the deepest soils are nearly always found in the valleys? More about that tomorrow. Water enables root growth, root growth provides stability and greater area from which the plant to draw the necessary water and nutrients to prosper. Water is life!

We too should build our ‘city’ of life by the flowing water of Christ. Water is frequently used in scripture literally and metaphorically. Jesus was baptized in Jordan River, the Holy Spirit descended as a dove saying, “This is my son in whom I am well pleased.” The water in a flowing river is a representation of the ground water underneath the surrounding land. When we build in the river bottom, we have the flowing water near-by; additionally we have ample water right below our feet; available for promoting and strengthening life. Water cleanses our hands, the waters of our baptism symbolically cleanse our sin; permanently washing them away because of Christ’s death and resurrection.

Water is necessary for seed germination, leading to wheat, leading to bread. Christ blood, containing mostly water germinate the seeds of the eternal bread of life in our life. We simple must accept the watering of our souls from Christ’s blood, we must seek and accept the Kingdom of God and all else will be added unto us.

Rapport - The Fragrance of Life

Have you met people that you instantly like? You and they have established instant rapport.

What is rapport? Is all rapport good? A quick search on Amazon.com returns 14,961 Results. The Oxford English Dictionary defines the French origin Rapport as, “a close relationship in which people understand each other and communicate well.”

How do we build rapport? The recordings and references I have listened to over the years, define the establishment of rapport as the foundation of successful salesman, “instant” credibility, likeability and relationships. One person defines rapport as, “The Key to Influencing People, Including Yourself.” The techniques include mirroring someone’s body language, voice tonality and pace. Mirroring includes empathizing with others emotionally; agreeing with their position.

Masterful manipulators use these techniques to influence others in taking the manipulator’s desired action. The real question is whether the desired action is Christ’s will for the person being manipulated.

Whenever I attempt to use the above techniques for establishing rapport, I fail miserably in placing hope on myself. For that, I am grateful! Conversely, when focusing on Christ; helping others achieve Christ’s will for their life; I establish instant rapport with all whom have a heart for Christ. II Corinthians 2:15-16 says that we are the aroma of Christ, “To one the smell of death, to the other, the fragrance of life.” Is there a greater way of establishing rapport than being the fragrance of life in Christ?

What kind of rapport do we establish by assuming the smell of death? Have you smelled death, a decaying animal? The smell of death is atrocious! We go out of our way to avoid the smell of death.

The fragrance of life is greater than the greatest fragrance on earth. The fragrance of life is better than any flower, cologne or perfume; past, present or future. The fragrance of life in Christ has greater attraction than the world’s most powerful magnet. Yet, just an object lacking the proper chemical properties is not drawn to the most powerful magnet, those lacking the spiritual qualities of Christ will not be drawn to the fragrance of life. Can iron be injected into plastic for magnetic draw? Absolutely! Can Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit be injected in into those currently opposed to the fragrance of Christ? Absolutely!

As you search for techniques of building rapport, thoroughly investigate your motives. If your motives are secular, the techniques above will work just fine; especially for those who continue smelling Christ as death. However, if your motive is loving the Lord your God, with all of your heart, mind and soul; loving your fellow man as much as you love yourself; establish rapport with the saturation of Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit in your every thought, word, and deed. Allow Christ to saturate you with the fragrance of life.

Do you finish other people’s sentences?

Several years ago, following a Toastmasters meeting I visited with a local businessman and philanthropist, Joe, whom visited our club to promote a fund raiser. Joe told of attending Kansas State University’s world-renowned College of Veterinary Medicine. As Joe began telling of his experiences in Manhattan, I began finishing his sentences whenever he paused as I knew exactly what he was going to say. Wrong!!! I did not know how Joe was finishing his sentences.

I normally do not engage in finishing someone’s sentences, however the excitement of discussing Manhattan and Kansas State got the better of me in that conversation. Moreover, his favorite professor of Vet Med was the father of two of my friends and high school cross country teammates. The first few times of my interruption, Jim patiently stated, “No, I was going say…” Following my sixth repetition of rudely and inaccurately finishing sentences, Joe politely dismissed himself.

Are you irritated when others finish your sentences, especially when completed inaccurately? Have you ever finished someone’s sentences? Others tend to inaccurately finish my sentences when I pause, just as I did when Joe paused. Instead of listening we jump to conclusions. Frequently, emotional irritation is the only damage. However, when continued, we lose credibility as a listener. Even great damage is possible.

Once in the summer of 1986, Jim and I were instructed to drive a farm truck to Fettger’s (the name of a farm) to meet my cousins where we would load straw bales. As soon as Jim and I heard “Fettger’s” we stopped listening; because we knew exactly where the Fettger place was since we irrigated there every morning. We jumped in the truck, driving the 12 miles on gravel roads to the Fettger place. We were puzzled because we had not seen wheat on that piece of land; however we were only familiar with the irrigated portion of the property. As we drove we discussed that the wheat, and resulting straw bales must be in the dry land portion of the property. Upon arrival we saw no one. Twenty minutes later, we still saw no one. We reassured ourselves that we were told to meet at the Fettger place. After half an hour passed, and no two-way radio and long before cell phones; we drove back to the ‘yard’; the farmstead where my mom and her siblings were raised.

Once in the yard, we sheepishly began calling for direction on the two-way. My uncles were less than thrilled! We were told to go to a different Fettger place, one nearby; additionally we were to have waited and followed my cousins to the specific field. We wasted significant time, fuel, and energy; while generating enormous frustration at us. We finished the sentence of our directions; we failed to listen to the full instructions.

Do you finish God’s sentences? I have! At times, I know God is giving me a specific message, only to fail upon acting. I later realize I finished God’s sentence instead of listening to the entire message. I inaccurately finish God’s messages when he pauses, or when I “know” exactly what He is going to say. But I do not know, as His wisdom far exceeds my wisdom and your wisdom.

Perhaps you say, "But Lord, you told me to accept this promotion, this new job. Why am I miserable?" The Lord says, "No, I told you to interview for the position." We say, "Lord, why am I unable to pay for my new car that you told me to buy?" He replies, "I instructed you to visit the dealership and test drive the new car."

The next time our Lord speaks to your heart: Listen! Listen through the pauses; listen to the entire sentence, paragraph, chapter and book. Listening to the entire message enables you and I to be fully in tune with our Savior and the Holy Spirit.

Word of God

When I was about fifteen months old, my dad said I quickly went from standing right beside him to climbing about twenty feet up the ladder on the nearby windmill tower in our farmyard. I began walking at seven months old, and loved climbing. Dad yelled at me to "Get Down!!" I can only imagine the concern racing through his mind; upon hearing his voice, I nearly jumped.

Why did I nearly jump? Because, I knew and respected my father's voice. I knew Dad was speaking to me. If an unfamiliar voice were to have proclaimed the same words, I would have been nonrespondent. If Dad would have delivered the precisely same message to a stranger, would they have reacted as I did? No, because my dad's voice would have no meaning to them.

Do you know your parent's voice? Does or did it get your attention? Just as we know our parent's voice, we know God's voice. For those who have never met their parents, would they recognize their father's voice? Of course not, how could they recognize something they had not heard.

Unfortunately, not all recognize God's voice. Unfortunately, not all know Christ.

"The miracles I do in my Father's name speak for me, but you do not believe because you are not my sheep." John 10:25-26

Is transforming God's Word, written or spoken, through people a miracle? Is maintaining accuracy of the Word while translating between languages a miracle? I believe both are miracles. Jesus is the Word made Flesh as described in the first chapter of John.

Occasionally I hear people say the Bible is NOT God's pure Word, rather simply stories of faithful people during that time. I realized they lack belief of God's ability to speak to the prophets and the interpreters of language over time, because they are unfamiliar with God's voice in their life.

Only in knowing Jesus, being one of his sheep, are we able to comprehend and believe the miracle of God's pure Word in scripture as written by other sheep belonging to Christ.

Christ's sheep know His voice, enabling them to believe His miracles. Knowing and hearing Christ's voice allows us to comprehend and believe the human transcribers of scripture also knew, listened and obeyed the pure Word of God.

If you have difficulty believing scripture is the pure Word of God, pray for God to open your heart and ears allowing you to know and hear Christ's voice as one of His sheep.
