The finish line of Greatness lies beyond an inescapable cement wall. Faith, Wisdom, Hope, Desire, Vision and Love enable passage through the wall.
The wall's thickness and density are proportional to the awaiting Greatness.

Second Hand Negative
Have you received a multitude of warnings regarding the
dangers of second-hand smoke? Some suggest our lungs fill with tar from
second-hand smoke, as do the lungs of smokers. A plethora of studies, documents
and discussions exist regarding the effects of second-hand smoke. I lack any
desire or intention of picking-on those who smoke.
When you or I associate with smokers, especially if we
gather in a smoke-filled room, smoke saturates our clothes. The smoke-filled environment
causes our eyes to redden, and the deepening and raspy sound of our vocal
tonality. Enough exposure to smoke eventually causes our sense of smell to
adapt, leading to eventually accepting the aroma of smoke as normal.
Those with whom we encounter after leaving the smoke-filled environment instantly sense the environmental effects of second-hand smoke. They instantly know we had been in a smoke-filled environment, they smell the smoke on our clothes, the see the redness in our eyes, and hear the deep, raspy tonality of our voice.
Even if we become accustomed to the smell, no longer
noticing the effect on our clothes, eyes and voice, others still notice. It is
nearly impossible to avoid the powerfully obvious effects of second-hand smoke.
The mention of second-hand smoke serves only illustrative
purposes in this discussion. I believe another second-hand contaminate contains
exponentially greater damaging effects than smoke—Second-hand Negative.
When we associate with negative people or gather in a
room filled gossip and complaining, the negative begins infiltrating our
attitude. Just like smoke, even if we become calloused to the effects, no
longer sensing negative, the effects remain. As others detect our presence
around smoke, they too detect our presence around negative.
What are the effects of second-hand negative? Our
attitude diminishes, our eyes and smiles lose their optimistic sparkle. Our
voice shifts from a cheerful tone to one of despair. The brief illustration of
a negative person speaking—when presenting in a keynote or seminar—causes loss
of optimism, and energy. The tar of negativity ruins our creativity,
imagination, vision, encouragement, and optimism.
Those with whom we encounter instantly detect our
previous association with second-hand negative. They hear negative tonality in
our voice, see despair—at minimum they sense a lack of optimism—in our eyes and
face. We lose our attractiveness—negative causes us to become unattractive. It
is nearly impossible to avoid the powerfully obvious effects of second-hand negative.
The effects second-hand negative hinder our physical and emotional
health in real ways. Negative emotions significantly impact the secretion of
neurotransmitters.
Neurotransmitters affect:
- Appetite
- Cardiovascular System
- Control of Muscles
- Immune System
- Injury Recovery
- Motivation
To avoid second-hand smoke saturating my clothes, causing
them to stink, along with my eyes reddening and my voice becoming raspy, I now
remain outside of smoky environments. If I open the door to a smoke filled
room, I immediately shut it and go elsewhere.
When you and I recognize the detrimental effects of second-hand
negative—literally and figuratively—we will close every door leading to rooms
filled with negativity. You and I will immediately go elsewhere.
Shut the door to negative associations!
Regain, restore, replenish the attractive sparkle in your
eyes, smile and voice. Strengthen your creativity, imagination, vision,
encouragement, and optimism. Strengthen your physical and emotional health.
Avoid second-hand negative!

To Be the Best...A Great America
To be the Best, we must Think, Prepare and Respond as the Best. To be a Great Nation, a Great America, we must Think, Prepare and Respond as a Great Nation, as a Great America. ~ Rick E. Meyer
Are current American leaders and citizens Thinking, Preparing and Responding as the leaders and citizens who elevated America to Greatness? Great America chooses freedom over security. Great America understands the symbiotic relationship of Freedom and Responsibility. Great America places faith in God.
A nation that Thinks, Prepares and Responds as failing nations, will fail. Failing nations burden people and organizations with excessive regulations. Failing nations trust in Government instead of God. Failing nations discourage and prohibit worship of God--Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Failing nations oppose freedom and responsibility, rather relying on their god, government, for provision. Pride comprises the roots of failing nations, pride comprises the roots of placing faith, hope and trust in man over God. Throughout history, every nation denying reliance on God, fails.
America, we approach the point of no return regarding our Liberation and Freedom. America, Think, Prepare, and Respond as the Great America, the World Leader America, the America that fights for and defends the Constitution as well as promoting Liberation and Freedom around the globe.
America, our Thinking, Preparing and Responding as Great America begins with our submission to God the Father, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit. Humility, a humble spirit, comprises the roots of humility, of humble hearts. Humility comprises the roots placing faith, hope and trust in God over man.
Saying America is not a Christian nation denies acknowledging God's blessings on this Great Nation. America became great because of her submission and reliance on God. This includes forgiveness, as we all sin and fall short of the glory of God.
To be the Best, to be a Great Nation, a Great America, we must Think, Prepare, and Respond as the Best, as a Great Nation, a Great America. Let every person and Nation pursue greatness, let every person and nation submit to and humble themselves before God. He will lift you and us up, this the Bible promises.

Possessions: Grain, Plant Material, or Chaff?
Do you find moving painful and exhausting? How does one choose what to keep versus dispose?
During Christmas break I return from Dallas where I am pursuing a Masters of Art in Truth Leadership, to meet my sister at Mom’s house in Nebraska. Our task involves removing the garages’ remaining possessions. My mother remarried December 3, 2011, five years after Dad’s passing; she sells her house while moving in with her husband—a good thing.
The process appears relatively simple; choosing to keep or dispose of items consumes energy if allowed. The physical items contain little value, rather the people and resulting relationships attached to something such as a book or a gift from a distant Christmas or birthday provide value. I picked-up childrens' Christmas books received from great-aunts and grandparents when I was a child. The books remind me of their love as they share their faith with my sister, cousins, and me.
Upon beginning to transfer these books into the save pile, a conscience, convicting bolt of intuition struck. My favorite book, the Bible, instructs us of the chaff burning while preserving the grain. These books, along with other possessions resemble chaff or straw.
Is chaff or straw worthless? No! Grain development and maturation depend upon healthy plant tissue. Grain production mandates healthy, vibrant plant stem, roots, leaves, tissue, chemistry, and cells. Disease, storms, and poor management hinder the plant’s resulting yield. From planting through harvest, the plant’s components serve determinate roles in grain production. Harvest separates the matured grain from plant tissue.
Mature grain possesses abundant nutrient value, used to feed and serve the world directly as food, by-products, or livestock feed. Mature plant tissue often possesses little nutrient value, transforming from plant to chaff, straw, or residue. Farmers manage the chaff by tilling, leaving to deteriorate, or burning this expired plant material. They do not transport expired plant material to the bin, elevator, or any storage (a few rare exceptions exist); it serves no purpose in the grains next stage of use. This practice allows the residue’s use for a new crop, and provides room for new growth.
These books, and many of my possessions, possess the same characteristics as plant material. Their presence enhanced my spiritual and emotional development. They provided valuable soul nutrients during my childhood development. New stages of development required separating from these “plant materials,” advancing to new stages of serving society.
Once separated, the old material became straw in my life; this plant material of books and other items were vital in the past, but not the present or future. Storing or moving these past possessions resembles keeping or storing chaff. The Bible suggests this lacks wisdom.
Either I incorporate my chaff into other lives—enhancing their yields, or dispose to provide room for new growth, new great yields. How do you manage your chaff?
Separate your possessions by grain, living plant material, and chaff.

Greatness

“Do not be afraid to be great.” Coach Bill “Congo” Congleton repeated this motivating statement continually during our two championship seasons of cross country. This, along with a plethora of his other patented phrases, are permanently branded on my cerebral mass—my brain. Imagine Greatness fills my website banner.
“Why is anyone afraid of being great?” As a teenager, I firmly believed everyone sought greatness. Greatness personifies America! Freedom and responsibility of pursuing one’s dream provides opportunities for greatness.
“What is greatness? You have it on your website, and you speak of being great. How do you define greatness?” Chuck presented an excellent question.
We speak of great teams, great performances, great achievements, etc. etc. In 1869, Francis Galton associated greatness with genius. Do you believe genius achieves greatness? Other define greatness as possessing great strength, intellect or power.
Would you agree defining great achievements hinges upon one’s values and effort? Greatness equals the value of the achievement multiplied by the percentage of our maximum effort.
Consider creating a list of your activities, assign a value of one to ten (highest) to their positive-permanent impact on you, your family, business, community, and anyone else you feel compelled to affect.
Next evaluate your percent of effort based on your ability in performing these tasks. Multiplying the value and the effort provides your greatness score.
However, our activities alone fail to define or qualify greatness! Rather, our heart, our motive, driving our activities define greatness (Mt. 7:21). Do we serve in response man or God? Does our service originate with love?
Greatness exists in serving others in response to our love of God and those whom we serve.

Your Example ?
During the fall sports seasons, many fans expect great achievements from their favorite high school, college and professional teams.
In the mid-1990s while living in Nebraska; I led "Prayers of the People" before the congregation of a relatively large church. Most expected their beloved Nebraska Cornhuskers to win yet another National Championship in football.
My last prayer remained simple: Lord, help us expend our efforts and strive for excellence in our own lives to reach the national level of success we expect of our favorite teams.
If the members of your favorite team followed your example of effort, discipline and excellence; would they achieve your expected level of success for them?

Your Second Wind is Just the Beginning
How many times have you felt on the brink of collapse from physical or mental exhaustion? Are you relieved upon receiving your second wind, your second burst of energy? I, like you, have experienced this numerous times over the years, whether during physical work, office work, or running.
The body becomes queasy, the legs and arms feel as if they will collapse at any moment; strength is absent. Fatigue blurs our thinking, disguising obvious choices and solutions.
Suddenly, as described by lyrics of an old Billy Joel song, your “second wind” comes along. Physical invigoration and clarity of thoughts resumes.
Four or five times during a long run Sunday, I desired quitting. Fatigue quickly generates justifications for ending the workout, such as the wind, boredom, fatigue, age, minor aches and pains. Fortunately, experience quickly disintegrates these temptations of complacency, a new “wind” provides physical and mental restoration for continued running.
Many encourage us to persevere until we attain our “second wind”. Unfortunately, we frequently stop at the end our “second wind”.
Greatness occurs beyond the “second wind”, rather the sixth, eighth, or tenth “wind”. Stamina enables a multitude of “winds”, numerous mental and physical rejuvenations. Champions develop physical and mental 'staying power' to endure through as many “winds”, rejuvenations, as necessary to achieve the desired goals and dreams.
My staying power on Sunday derived from experience, including faith. Trials and patience yield wisdom, wisdom yields staying power. The roots of my physical and mental stamina perpetually deepen in the fertile soils of scripture. The Bible assures we attain strength in Christ; all things are possible through Him. He restores our energy, and clarity.
Does exhaustion from life’s battles cause you to question your staying power? Does your mind blur from fatigue? Hang in there, Christ provides your “second wind”; as well as an eighth “wind” or as many “winds” as necessary for achieving His will for your life.
You may feel on the brink of collapse, Christ will restore your energy. Receive His restoration through reading the Bible, prayer, fellowship, associations and enduring life’s trials.
Faith continues beyond your second wind! Faith generated wisdom increases emotional, physical and spiritual staying power.
