Obedience

Tuesday Evening, Food for Thought:

Obedience to God praises God. We praise God through prayer, song and worship as well as through our obedience to Him. Obedience originates in God's word, the word made flesh--the Lord Jesus Christ--and the Bible.

If Winning Were Easy... Referral

To Whom It May Concern,

I am writing this letter to highly recommend keynote speaker, Rick E. Meyer. Currently, I am a student at Maryville University of Saint Louis, Missouri. Here, I serve as president of Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Our organization is young and our campus is growing rapidly in the athletics.

While considering this, my team was praying for opportunities for campus outreach and Rick immediately came to mind. Two years ago, I met Rick as I was flying home from college. He struck up a conversation when he noticed that I was wearing a track jacket and being a runner himself, he wanted to ask about my team.

From this short meeting before our flights, I was inspired by how Rick relates to people. It is clear that his heart burns for Christ. From our short chat, I learned that he is a keynote speaker, who gives special focus on the competitive spirit and how we must fix our eyes on Christ to truly live.

This past March, my university hosted Rick to speak for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Our theme for our meeting discussed what it truly means to succeed. Rick presented his speech ‘If Winning Were Easy, Everybody Would Do It’. This event was truly a blessing; Rick speaks by the Spirit and lets the LORD define the direction of what is being discussed.

From this night, I learned an important and striking lesson: Rick Meyer is an excellent speaker because he is a careful listener. His passion to share Christ’s love with people is shown whether he meets just one person for a brief moment, or a large gathering for an anticipated conference.

In either case, Rick listens carefully for what Christ would have him share. I cannot express how much I enjoyed working with Rick to organize our event. He demonstrates humility, a speaking presence of the experienced and contagious joy. I highly recommend him and would absolutely host him at our university again.

Sincerely,

Jasmine Schmidt

Words and Raindrops

The farmers’ smiles and optimism escalated as the gentle rain descended upon their farmland for several hours. “This soaking rain, answers our prayers.”

“Can’t imagine too much, if any, running off. We probably had a couple of inches” observes another—heads nod in agreement.

The minimal force with which the rain fell, enable soil pores to remain open. This factor optimized the soil’s rate of infiltration, which exceeded the rate of rainfall. Consequently, the soil absorbed all the rain—preventing run-off.

Absorbed rain provides a plethora of crop production benefits. The water provides moisture for seed germination, plant growth, herbicide activation, and nutrient uptake for certain plant nutrients. Water opens the double-layered clay soils, enhancing root-growth and nutrient availability of nutrients attached to the cations (cat-ions) in the clay soils.

This water loosens all soil, reducing or eliminating compaction and hard-pans to enable root penetration into the subsoil for additional water as well as benefit plant stability. Absorbed water during the winter months, provides freezing and thawing of the soil which increases it productivity through greater fragmentation.

These benefits occur with patience—let the rain soak in before driving or cultivating the soil, or lose some of the benefits. Steady, gentle rain produces more fruit, maximizing yield.

Conversely, a hard rain of the same volume often proves detrimental. Greater kinetic energy may result in a crust or surface seal, reducing or eliminating infiltration. This results in run-off of the rainwater, carrying productive soil off the field. Soil and water low in sodium results in reduced infiltration or less water absorbed into the soil. Jesus also warns about lacking salt, results rest in physical science as well as spirituality.

Intense rain reduces fruit production, minimizing yield.

Are you speaking a message of a soft, gentle, steady rain, yield much fruit? A soft absorbing message and a soft voice are two distinct factors. Tortures may whisper softly to their victims, while carrying a devastating message.

When speaking an intense message, regardless of volume, remember to include the salt of Jesus’ love, mercy, grace and forgiveness resulting from confession and repentance. Jesus’ salt, like appropriate sodium in soil, will open their pores to absorb your message. To avoid "run-off" and erosion, restrict the rate and volume of the message to the level of your audiences absorbtion rate--ability to comprehend and apply.

When carrying the message and love of Christ, your listeners will smile like farmers during a steady, gentle rain.

Holy Spirit: Tomatos and Potatos

This is an excerpt from an assignment paper submitted for "Gospels" class.

In John 3:6 Jesus says that which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is Spirit. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, world-renowned plant scientists, Jim Shepherd and Jerry Uyemoto, from Kansas State University visited our farm in north-central Kansas.

Initially they conducted research, they and their families soon became our friends, staying in our home as guests to hunt doves and pheasants.

Even though my parents formal education consisted of a high school diplomas from small, rural schools; they enjoyed my parents humble, serving personalities and thought patterns.

In December 1981, Jim and his wife Flo invited us to Manhattan to watch Kansas State and Louisville compete in basketball. The previous spring Louisville defeated K-State in Elite Eight in a heart-breaker on their way to the national championship.

In the afternoon, before Jack Hartman’s quad defeated Denny Crum’s defending champions, Jim provided my dad and I a tour of his laboratory in Waters Hall on K-State’s campus. I looked through a $100,000 microscope, the absolute best at the time, at a bunch of cells.

Jim was the world’s first to develop a plant that was genetically 50 percent potato and 50 percent tomato. He combined the genetic codes of tomatoes and potatoes. That which was born of the potato genetics was potato, and that which was born of the tomato genetics was tomato.

This plant consisted of two fruits, yet one plant; equivocally believers are sinners and saints until we enter heaven. We are born with solely the genetics of the flesh, the genetics of sin.

Just as the Jim’s plant required a scientist to inject tomato genetics into the potato genetics, we need Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit to inject the Spirit genetics into our flesh genetics. Neither the potato, a below ground vegetable of the earth, nor us can achieve this on our own—we depend on another! The above ground tomato is a fruit-fruits of the Spirit-and red—symbolically representing Christ’s blood.

How do we determine whether the tomato or potato produces the greatest yields?

Fertilizer and management determine the yield. If we fertilize and manage for the below ground potato, it will flourish while the tomato diminishes producing little if any fruit. If we fertilize and manage for the tomato, it will produce abundant fruit.

Equivocally, we must choose to fertilize and manage our below ground nature of the flesh, or our above ground fruit, the genetics of the Holy Spirit. Wisdom mandates Christians fertilize and manage for abundant fruits of the Spirit. Our nutrients arrive from scripture, prayer, worship, devotion, and relationships with other believers.

We open our roots to the uptake of proper water and nutrients. The plant fails in earning water and nutrients, rather accepts them as they interact with their leaves and roots; we fail earning being born of the Spirit, Spiritual genetics, other than repenting and confessing with His conviction, believing in Christ and accepting all the spiritual nutrients available in our environments.

One is unable to deceive a plant with improper nutrients; they arrive as truth. Plant health and yield depend upon physical and chemical soil environment congruent with the plant’s design. Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit provide proper physical and chemical soil environment for our Spiritual health and yield, are truth we must worship, speak, and write in truth.

Submit to Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit, fertilize and manage for the Fruit of the vine / Spirit in your life.

E=mC >E=mc2

Updated

I craved temporary death the last five miles of the Boston Marathon, seeking relief from the knife-piercing pain of dehydration and exhaustion.

Do you crave complete relief from the exhaustion of responsibilities pushing you to the edge of emotional, physical, and spiritual collapse?

Do you believe Christ desires great achievements in your life, yet you remain unsure how to complete them?

Where does the energy to achieve Christ’s plans for your life originate?

First, let us examine the components of energy. Albert Einstein discovered the Theory of Relativity in the early Twentieth Century, E =mc2 (E = Energy, m = mass, and c = speed of light). This equation revealed all matter has the same energy per ounce.

For example, a ounce of straw has the same energy as a ounce of uranium. Mass equals matter, operating as wavelengths. Other forms of wavelengths include light, sound, and thoughts.

Yes, the speed of light influences the quantity of your energy. I studied this formula a multitude of times since junior high science. Recently, a new pondering came to light while reviewing the Theory of Relativity. Is all light equal? I previously believed all light molecules are equal in speed—670,616,629 MPH—thus equal in energy.

Conversely, molecules from created light pale in power to the Creator’s light, the Light of Christ, C (John 1:3-5,9). Christ contains the purest, brightest, and fastest light.

Energy = mass*Christ (Light of the World) > Energy = mass*speed of light2

Instead of receiving temporary death at Boston, my soul cried out those final five miles. Lord, I need you! I can’t, You can, we are. It is not me, but Christ who is in me. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me (Philippians 4:13).

Christ provided sufficient energy for my race completion, along with the two-liters of IV’s for re-hydration in the post-race medical tent.

When seeking your source of energy to achieve Christ’s will for your life, submit your physical, emotional, and spiritual mass, your heart, soul, and mind to the Light of Christ who provides miraculous energy.

This submission invites Christ’s exponential increase of your existence,
just as He also increased the mass—the filling power—of the fish and bread when feeding the crowds of five-thousand men, plus the women and children (Matthew 14:13-21).

E=mC provides sufficient energy for the completion of your race, along with hydration from the water with which you will never thirst again (John 4:14).

Dallas Theological Seminary

I am beginning pursuit of a M.A. Christian Leadership at Dallas Theological Seminary this Fall (August 2011). This is a leap of Faith in response to a long time call to the ministry.

I continually recall my Dad's advice in our last meaningful conversation before his death, "Always trust God, remember that son, Trust God always." "I will Dad, I will."

Christ has always provided each of our needs, and will continue to do so as we seek first His Kingdom and His Righteousness; all else will be added to unto you, me and all who seek Christ.

Judging

Mt. 7:1 “Do not judge, or you too will be judged.”

Frequently when driving, I get upset with other drivers; particularly the fast maniacs and the slow pokes. Of course, this is all relative to my driving the ‘perfect’ speed of three or four miles an hour over the speed limit. If only other drivers were as perfect as me! Do you share this attitude whether driving, performing a task at work, or volunteering?

I fail to consider the reason others are speeding more than I am; perhaps they are taking someone to the hospital, or hurrying to assist someone in danger. Maybe they are in deep thought; their cruise control does not work, and have no idea of their speed. A plethora or reasons exist for those speeding as well as the ‘slow pokes.’ Perhaps the ‘Slow poke,’ is returning from the hospital where a family member just passed away. Maybe they too are in deep thought or enjoying a good conversation with a passenger.

I am wrong in judging them as maniacs or slow pokes; as I do not know the reason for their chosen speed. Does this allow each of us to avoid and disregard the speed limit and rules of the road? Of course not! Driving laws and speed limits are implemented for travelers’ safety. Following them enhances our chance of traveling safely for many years.

Ultimately, I am judging the creators of the speed limit as ineffective when I intentionally speed, or encourage others to disregard the speed limit. Fortunately, the Sheriff, deputies and State Patrol are forgiving when I exceed the speed limit by 1/100th MPH or 4 MPH. However, if they continually heard me condemning others breaking the speed limit; they would give me a ticket every time I exceeded the limit.

The Bible is full of examples of Jesus, Apostles and Disciples proclaiming the “Speed Limit,” this proclamation is different than judging others. Judging others is lifting us and our sinful behavior as acceptable and theirs as condemnable.

Just as we are to avoid condemning others, we are also to avoid condemning the laws and the Creator of laws. We are to avoid intentionally living outside of the law, and encouraging others to live outside the law.

Fortunately, God through Christ’s death and resurrection forgives us every time will break his laws. However, scripture states that if we condemn others of their mistakes; he will condemn us each time we fail to live perfectly.

Peace Beyond Understanding

Two years ago this August, I was asked to resign from my Agronomy Sales position due to effectively being too honest with customers. Monsanto sales reps chastised me for internalizing and applying Biblical principles.

A co-worker and client attempted to “show me the ropes” as they expected me to give unfair favor to the client over other clients who placed their orders first; “Rick, you don’t understand how things are done around here.” I acknowledged that they were probably right, “I do understand honesty and integrity.” They quickly shot back, “We throw honesty and integrity out the window this time of year.”

Another peer attempted to explain Biblical principles are virtually an automatic path to failure in agronomy retail sales. This was a 180 degree turn from working as a Crop Consultant for Central States Agronomics, Inc. in Kearney, NE. Owners Mark and Eileen Kottmeyer founded their business and personal lives on Biblical principles. Central States Agronomics, Inc. and its clientele demanded honesty and integrity, always.

Despite losing my position and salary, the inner peace saturated my soul. The Holy Spirit assured me that he had greater plans; plans where one does not have to hide their light under a basket. Rather letting Christ’s light illuminate in every aspect of life. In September 2009, Mark Kottmeyer during a lunch meeting, strongly suggested I attend seminary.

Where does peace originate in worldly turmoil?

When the Holy Spirit, the Comforter sent by Christ, saturates our soul; we live in Peace regardless of external circumstances. Observers are amazed of a Christian’s inner peace, when the worldly circumstances warrant severe panic and emotional turmoil.

I believe Christians, those saturated with the Holy Spirit; experience the same logic defying peace even during seemingly horrific deaths. Just as a worldly view believes the loss of job, salary and other possessions is reason for terror; so it believes horrific deaths are also terrifying. However, just as the Christian lives peacefully amidst economic turmoil, so we will be at peace in our physical deaths. O death, where is your sting?

Surrender your emotional, spiritual, and relationship turmoil the Comforter sent by Christ Jesus; the Holy Spirit.

We are absent credit for the peace enjoyed in either situation; rather give praise, honor and glory to our Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit.

Healthy Diet

I surpassed 107,000 miles of lifetime running last week, perhaps more. Update: I have now surpassed 121,000 miles and not had the flu since February 2007.
This originated ponderings of comments over the years; especially in regard to my diet. What is a healthy diet?

For many years, and by numerous people, I am told that my diet lacks ‘healthy’ food. Ironically, most who condemn my eating habits possess more body fat, are sick at least once, usually several times, per year. I realize there are probably some who are healthier than I am, yet my body seems to do okay.

The flu bug has conquered me four times since December 1991. With one exception in 1999, my blood pressure and cholesterol remain low. When my diet was most heavily condemned, I was 2.5% body fat; and ran over 100 weekly miles. During a two and one-half year span of heavy training, injury was avoided by prayer, belief, faith and confession of scripture.

Yet, society says I eat and live in an unhealthy manner. The obvious question: How does one define or obtain healthy food? Healthy food is like good deeds, mankind’s efforts make neither good nor bad. Food and deeds are healthy and good when submitted to Christ. Seeking and receiving Christ’s blessings on our food, creates a healthy diet; beneficial exercise and deeds.

Christ tells Peter that all food made by God is good. Unhealthy diet, exercise and deeds exist when we seek our own glory, believing our secular choices create healthy lifestyles. Years ago, many ‘experts’ including the media condemned high fat, high cholesterol diets.

Great-Aunt Ruth Douglass, my grandmother’s sister, delivered food to the shut-ins and remained active into her early 90s. Once when about 92 years old, Aunt Ruth quipped, “This eating bacon and eggs everyday and cooking with lard my whole life is sure killing me at a young age.” Her trademark smile possessed its glowing beam while speaking.

Aunt Ruth entered heaven a few weeks before her 97th birthday. What is the secret to Aunt Ruth’s heath? She requested the Lord’s blessing on her food, thoughts and deeds every day. The Lord provided her health!

Health is less about the years we live, rather the achievements garnered. Do you desire excellent health? Submit your food, thoughts and deeds to the Lord, requesting his blessing on all you eat, think and achieve.

I must go for a run! I pray the Lord blesses this and all runs, along with the food I eat and thoughts before, during and after the run. This has been the key to health and the missing factor when struggling, since my competitive running began June 1978.

Be healthy, Seek the Lord!

Christ's Status

Last Monday, June 13th 2011, I stood in the hotel room Jacuzzi enhancing the health of my lower legs while overlooking Lake Michigan.

This is the first I recall having a Jacuzzi in the room. A welcomed addition after a ten mile run along Lake Michigan’s shore in Traverse City the previous evening; including perpetually increasing intensity. Lower leg health is vital, particularly while traveling.

During my post-morning shower whirlpool, my curiosity wondered of friends’ updated status on Facebook. My Smartphone and Bible each sat along the edge of the Jacuzzi. I glanced at the Bible, as the still small inner voice suggested I read it instead of Facebook, ashamedly I ignored this voice several times. Why do I frequently respond amazingly idiotic?

Suddenly, and softly, while internally expressing my desire to check Facebook instead of read scripture; the gentle inner-voice asks, “Rick, why are you indifferent of my status? Why are you ignoring my voice and direction in your life?” Wow! I felt as if I had been hit with a ton of bricks.

Are you anxious to read Christ’s daily status updates in your life? Each reading of scripture reveals deeper truths, for you. The original meaning remains constant, our understanding deepens. For example, at first glance we may see a car, television or human body.

Study of these, or anything else, continually reveals deeper information about the object. The car, television or human body are the same from first glance to in-depth study. Scripture and Jesus Christ are the same, while we learn in layers or plateaus.

Daily studying and prayer uncover greater details; additional status updates, of Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. Ask, with faithful confidence, the Holy Spirit to open and transform your heart and mind to hearing and desiring his commands expressed through Christ’s updated status.

If Christ is my best friend, if I love him with all of my heart soul and mind; I will desire to read his status in scripture and post on his wall through prayer. What about you?

Whom to Please?

I recently heard a sermon regarding the complexity of life. While life can be complex, the sermon failed to mention methods of simplification.

My friend and successful businessman, Charles, frequently states he has no reputation, or regard for reputation, outside of his relationship with Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. Charles ellaborates, saying when he is alignment with the Holy Spirit, all relationships, including his wife and his mentor; fall into place.

The Bible instructs us in the Book of Psalm to please God, not men. Yes, God's creation is full of complexity and Christ's wisdom far exceeds the cumlative wisdom of all humans past, present and future. Seeking and pleasing the world is contrary to God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Simple is not easy, yet much less stressful. Simplify your life, choose to listen to, follow and obey Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. Forget about pleasing other people. Please Christ, as you will please those he desires you please. Be prepared, for his word also says that we, like him, will be persecuted as Christians.

Invest your Time and Energy in conversation with Jesus Christ, seeking to please him. Your reputation with the Holy Spirit will be amazing!

Simplify Your Life: Internalize Scripture, Pray, Listen and record direction from the Holy Spirit. Test the direction with Scripture, including quickly forgiving those who hurt you in any way.

Simplify Your Life: Accept the Bible as the Pure Word of God.

Simplify Your Life: TRUST Christ with ALL of your Concerns and Hopes; Fears and Dreams.

Your Second Wind is Just the Beginning

How many times have you felt on the brink of collapse from physical or mental exhaustion? Are you relieved upon receiving your second wind, your second burst of energy? I, like you, have experienced this numerous times over the years, whether during physical work, office work, or running.

The body becomes queasy, the legs and arms feel as if they will collapse at any moment; strength is absent. Fatigue blurs our thinking, disguising obvious choices and solutions.

Suddenly, as described by lyrics of an old Billy Joel song, your “second wind” comes along. Physical invigoration and clarity of thoughts resumes.

Four or five times during a long run Sunday, I desired quitting. Fatigue quickly generates justifications for ending the workout, such as the wind, boredom, fatigue, age, minor aches and pains. Fortunately, experience quickly disintegrates these temptations of complacency, a new “wind” provides physical and mental restoration for continued running.

Many encourage us to persevere until we attain our “second wind”. Unfortunately, we frequently stop at the end our “second wind”.

Greatness occurs beyond the “second wind”, rather the sixth, eighth, or tenth “wind”. Stamina enables a multitude of “winds”, numerous mental and physical rejuvenations. Champions develop physical and mental 'staying power' to endure through as many “winds”, rejuvenations, as necessary to achieve the desired goals and dreams.

My staying power on Sunday derived from experience, including faith. Trials and patience yield wisdom, wisdom yields staying power. The roots of my physical and mental stamina perpetually deepen in the fertile soils of scripture. The Bible assures we attain strength in Christ; all things are possible through Him. He restores our energy, and clarity.

Does exhaustion from life’s battles cause you to question your staying power? Does your mind blur from fatigue? Hang in there, Christ provides your “second wind”; as well as an eighth “wind” or as many “winds” as necessary for achieving His will for your life.

You may feel on the brink of collapse, Christ will restore your energy. Receive His restoration through reading the Bible, prayer, fellowship, associations and enduring life’s trials.

Faith continues beyond your second wind! Faith generated wisdom increases emotional, physical and spiritual staying power.

THINK INSIDE THE BIBLE!

(This written message is from personal notes recorded in 2004-2005)

Do you frequently hear, “Think outside the box?”

When introduced, the concept initiated expanding our possibility thinking. Unfortunately, many now “Think outside the box” of right and wrong, outside of morals and ethics.

Lucifer / Satan originated "Thinking outside the Box" of God's wisdom, knowledge, and understanding. The serpent then convinced Eve and Adam to "Think outside the Box" of Godly wisdom, God's Word, resulting in the introduction of sin. “Outside the Box” equates to outside of the Bible!

I researched scanned various job postings. Few, if any, list honesty and integrity as requirements for their respective positions. Perhaps, one may argue they lack specific listing because management expects these attributes.

Does management also expect excellent communications skills, serving customers, meeting and exceeding goals, etc? Most job descriptions frequently specific these attributes. Prudence mandates these necessary characteristics as equally necessary.

A great deal of interviewers flinch with the idea of mandating honesty and integrity. Secular organizations and businesses prefer candidates who forgo these concepts to reach and exceed corporate goals. “Profit always, integrity when convenient.”

Rather than, “Think outside the box” of morals and ethics, wisdom suggests we, “Think inside the Bible.”

“Thinking Inside the Bible” generates:

· Love of God

· Love of People

· Righteousness - being right with Christ.

· Morality

· Honesty

· Pure heart and mind

· Integrity

· Forgiveness

· Faith

· Humble Spirit

· Gentle

· Hope

· Peace

These fruits cause self-imposed limits of achievements to disseminate.

The Bible illustrates this barrier elimination in an array of passages including, “Nothing is impossible with God” and “All things are possible through Christ who strengthens us.” Consider this profound revelation: ALL means ALL.

God defines and contains the limits of all good.

The COMPACT OXFORD ENGLISH DICTIONARY defines All, “the greatest possible.” We simply must act in accordance with Christ, the Word made flesh.

Our greatest successful achievements reside in “the greatest possible” from Christ. I invite you to Think Inside The Bible!

Quickly repent, reject thoughts and actions contrasting biblical righteousness and fruits of the Spirit. Forgive yourself and others. Love your peers, family, friends, and competitors as much as you love yourself.

Love desires the absolute best, the deepest possible personal relationship with Jesus Christ. This includes communication with the Holy Spirit.

Love God—Father, Jesus Christ, Holy Spirit—with all of your heart, soul, strength, and mind. If and when anyone invites you to “Think Outside the Box,” rebuke the originator of wicked thoughts, Satan and all his works.

Your greatest possible success hinges upon your ability and willingness to:
