Discerning Character

Discerning Character
  • Satan is the father of lies (John 8:44).
  • God, the Father, the Lord Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit, is the Spirit of Truth (John 14:17, 15:26, 1 John 4:6).
We can best judge character, including our own, by comparing to the character of the one whom we seek to represent. Does our character resemble the character of God as presented in the Bible?

We have all sinned and fallen short (Romans 3:22-23), the key is turning to God through belief in Christ by the guidance of the Holy Spirit and seeking His character.

Today's Prayer:

Lord God, help each of us seek you, representing your character each and every moment of our lives. Lift up servants in every sector of business and government who believe and trust you, denouncing the father of lies, desiring to serve and represent you in serving your people.

Pray

In the last year at DTS, I have asked Dr. Pentecost, Dr. Toussaint and Chaplain Bill on separate occassions, "What, if anything, would you do differently in your life if given the opportunity?"

Each one separetely answered, "Pray more."

Each of these men's prayer life is considered exceptional by anyone's standards. A powerful lesson and opportunity for increasing prayer for you and me.

See Christ, Believe Christ, Achieve a perpetually growing relationship through the word and prayer in Christ!

Prayer:
Lord, place your desires on my heart. Cause me to perpetually hunger and thirst for relationship with you in your Word, associating with other believers, worship and continual prayer with you--seeking and extending your guidance, protection and mercy.

Thank you Father, in the name of Jesus, by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Servant Zone

Life's great joys reside in the Servant Zone. Serve whoever God places in your path with skills to enhance their relationship with Christ Jesus.

Thursday night @ Denver International, a mother of three waited to board the plane to Salt Lake City (her kids remained with relatives). Less than two hours before, she receive a phone call revealing her husband, a professional race car driver, severely crashed--that is All that she knew.

She was grateful to receive my prayers and the prescription of scripture. I shared that I could not promise physical results, however God does promise inner-peace beyond human understanding when we know and trust Him. She already knew Him.

Last night, Jenny gleefully introduced me to her husband, Mark, as they deplaned in Denver. He wore a neck brace with no broken bones, yet in much pain.

The Holy Spirit often guides our timing while opening our eyes, ears, hearts and mouth to serve Him in serving His people. All glory belongs to the God the Father, the Lord Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit--one God, three persons, co-equal, co-eternal.

Prayer Yields Joy

"Be joyful always; pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus." (1 Thessalonians 5:16–18 (NIV))

Continual prayer, thankfulness and joy results in receiving escalating joy, gratitude and desiring additional prayer.

Thirty-six hours after my dad received a diagnosis of lung cancer, he requested that we "pray for God to bless everyone we know." His request contained complete inclusiveness of God blessing "everyone we know," absent any conditions of his relationship with them throughout his or their life.

This was the last prayer that I heard him request. Hydrocephalus, water on the brain, prevented future understandable conversations. He died three weeks later.

Praying, especially for God's blessings on others, yields amazing—immeasurable—gratitude and joy in one's heart and mind. The joy resembles the "runner's high" and easily surpasses any temporary euphoric experience from alcohol. Praying for God's blessings on others, everyone we know, becomes addictive and leads to praise and worship of God the Father, the Lord Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit.

Picture the person(s) for whom you pray, along with their family and any of the specifics for which you may pray for them. I seek prayer requests from a few people, then write them down in a little black book. A common request includes assistance with writing papers for school. While praying, I visualize the person completing the paper with peace, contentment and joy.

I pray for others as the Lord places them on my heart and mind. Most have no idea that I pray, or you, pray for them. Yet, I am led to share with a few that I do pray for them. Most express immense gratitude, a few fail to respond. Our purpose in praying for them rests in our obedience to God as opposed to their approval or favorable response. We do not know what life challenges they are experiencing, and maybe they are not sure how to respond because you are the first non-family member to pray for them.

Regardless of the response or lack of response, we receive magnanimous joy and gratitude when we focus solely on serving the Lord in praying for others. Hold on tightly to your socks, lest this joy knock them off.

Pray for others, unconditionally, in obedient love for the Father, Son and Holy Spirit!

Leader Servant: Wisdom

If the most people understand and agree with virtually everything you or I say, then you and I probably speak with the wisdom of man instead of the Wisdom of God (1 Corinthians 1:18-31). We receive and communicate with the Wisdom of God through persistent, diligent prayer, Bible study and associating with spiritually mature Christians.

Serve with Godly Wisdom. Seeking, Receiving and Communicating God's Wisdom will attract the people, opportunities and challenges that God desires in our lives. Growth mandates challenges! Receive God's challenges in your life with Prayer, Gratitude (Thankfulness) and Joy (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18).

Leader Servant: Poor in Spirit

The Sermon on the Mount; The Beatitudes (Matthew 5:1-3)

aWhen Jesus saw the crowds, He went up on bthe 1mountain; and after He sat down, His disciples came to Him. aHe opened His mouth and began to teach them, saying, "1aBlessed are the 2poor in spirit, for btheirs is the kingdom of heaven."

I complete nighttime prayers, I consider watching an online thirty-minute television program. However, an instant, non-audible, distinct voice permeated my conscious mind, "Which do you consider a better investment of your time, television or time in the Bible and prayer with the omniscience, sovereign, triune God (Father, the Son, Lord Jesus Chris, and the Holy Spirit) who created everything (Jn 1:3)—including you, Rick, and reigns above all?"

The necessity of frequent, in-depth conversations with God through reading the Bible and prayer struck like lightning.

This searing lightning obliterates my pride, arrogance, and self-reliance.

Conversely, God's love, mercy, and power provide a poor in spirit heart that recognizes our complete dependence on God and the forgiveness of sins through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Additionally, internalizing the Bible and prayer help reveal God's will in every aspect of your life.

We instinctively pray continuously throughout the day as a result of our relationship with God and our poor in spirit heart. Additionally, God's wisdom leads us to also engage in specific times of only prayer.

The specific responsibilities of each person's daily service to God, vary. Yet, the Great Commission (Mt 28:16-20) applies to each follower of the Lord Jesus Christ. My current responsibilities include diligently studying the Bible word while attaining my Masters of Art in Christian Leadership at Dallas Theological Seminary in Dallas, TX. What do your current responsibilities entail?

My daily responsibility of serving God includes reading thousands of pages, writing hundreds of pages, and committing hundreds of Bible verses to memory every semester. Additionally, I serve God in my business through in speaking across the United States and writing to a global audience, along with competitive distance running.

The latter mandates continual weight loss because excess weight significantly slows one down. In life and running, wisdom suggests we remove excess physical, emotional and spiritual weight to perform at our highest capacities which enable us to serve God to the best of our abilities.

As my parents frequently said throughout my life, "Just do your best." Their command requires great effort and faith. As does my dad's last command, "Always trust God. Remember that son. Trust God Always!

Are you and I achieving our best from watching television or from reading the Bible and praying? Does always trusting God lead us to watch television for thirty minutes or read the Bible and pray for thirty minutes?

I wrapped up a phone conversation this past week asking my mentor what I should focus on this next week.

Charles responded, "Ask, 'Am I anchored in God in every area of my life?'"

These commands, questions, and acknowledging my poor spirit before God, perpetually direct each of my thoughts, words, and actions. How do they affect you? This leads to regularly internalize the Bible and prayer instead of watching an unnecessary sitcom.

Yes, I probably will watch television again. During my twenties, I lived without a television for three or four years while pursuing my running prime. One should never take my choices and messages of tonight as a law or life rule.

Instead, consider your thoughts, actions, and choices in your relationship with Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. Let your love of God (1Jn 4:19) inspire your desire to serve and please Him to the best of your ability.

Do you trust God enough to seek His wisdom for every area of your life?
Is every area of your life anchored in Christ?
Your response to these inquiries reveals whether your heart is poor in spirit before God.
"When Luther’s puppy [n. 116, Luther's dog Tölpel is mentioned again and again in the Table Talk.] happened to be at the table, looked for a morsel from his master, and watched with open mouth and motionless eyes, he [Martin Luther] said, 'Oh, if I could only pray the way this dog watches the meat! All his thoughts are concentrated on the piece of meat. Otherwise he has no thought, wish, or hope.'"

Food for Thought: Answered Prayers

The prayers heard, thus answered by God—the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ—in the Bible are those spoken with passion, emotion and belief.

Nehemiah wept and mourned when he received word of Jerusalem's destroyed wall (Nehemiah 1). David continually prays with strong emotion in First and Second Samuel as well as in Psalm. Jesus passionately prays in Gethsemane, as well as other times (Matthew 26:36-46).

You may respond, "Well sure, but Jesus died on the cross despite his passionate prayer."

If so, we miss the point of prayer! Jesus prayed for the fulfillment of the Father's will. Jesus' death and resurrection we spoken of by the prophets in the Old Testament, his death on the Cross fulfilled God the Father's purpose, as did the Jesus' resurrection and ascension (Acts 1:9). We pray too passionately pray for the fulfillment of God's will—because His wisdom exceeds all other thoughts, plans and logic combined.

The blind man called out, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me (Luke 19:35-42)." The blind man emphatically pleaded with Jesus to receive his sight. Jesus healed him because of the blind man's faith.

Dwell on the power of God, and if your prayer request glorifies Him—this defines asking anything in Jesus' name (John 16:26, 27).

Pray with passion, emotion, faith, belief in the power of God the Father, the Lord Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit to deliver according the Father's will (Matthew 6:8-15, 7:21).

P.S. The official writing standards call for abbreviation of the books of the Bible. This serves well in saving space when communicating with others familiar with the Bible. However, Christianity should avoid all attributes of an exclusive insiders club. Rather, we desire to share God's word, which includes assuring the ease of anyone to easily define which book of the Bible referenced.

Listen and Respond to Christ’s Voice

My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me (John 10:27 NIV).

As a child growing-up on the farm, Dad expected me to run in response to his commands. If he asked for a 11/16" deep socket, I ran to find the 11/16" deep socket, then ran to deliver the socket to him. He expected the same response in getting a shovel, a tractor, the pick-up or something in the house. When my father spoke, he expected an immediate, urgent response in my running to fulfill his command. I obeyed because I knew my father's voice, and I strongly desired to please him. Oftentimes, Dad did not have time to explain why he needed me to run for whatever he needed. I was expected to run in response despite whether I understood the purpose of the command.

Naturally, our loving desire to please our heavenly Father, responding to Christ's voice spoken in our hearts by the indwelling Holy Spirit should generate at least an equal response to our dad's voice.

True obedience responds immediately.
~ Dr. Stan Toussaint, Dallas Theological Seminary

Other times have failed to immediately respond to Christ's voice, because my selfish pride prevented my recognizing, my knowing Christ's voice. In the spring and early summer of 2009, I had "hunches" to visit a neighbor across the yard. My sinful, inward focused pride prevented me from visiting this neighbor who lived by himself. I justified that I was too busy; another time will work better for both of us.

Additionally, my sinful pride rhetorically asked, "What will this guy whom I never met think? What will the other neighbors think of me visiting this raggedy dressed man.'

I am embarrassed to write about my terrible sins, I now am unable to understand what causes such as awful thoughts, and more importantly what caused my obedience to these sinful, prideful thoughts. During Saturday morning Bible study in mid-July, one of the men told of my neighbor whom I was too busy and prideful to visit, committed suicide due to loneliness. The indwelling Holy Spirit requested that I visit this man. I ignored the Holy Spirit, I failed to listen to Christ's voice. I failed to follow Christ to that man's home.

Consequently, I now strive to immediately respond to Christ's voice, even if I risk embarrassment. I would rather be embarrassed in immediately responding to the voice of Holy Spirit, than risk failing to respond. This includes calling someone immediately before entering a meeting because I hear in my heart and mind the Holy Spirit's voice instructing me to leave a message of healing and encouragement. A few minutes later the person sent a text message thanking me for the message. This text message validates that I did appropriately listen to and respond to Christ's voice.

Other times, I send messages of thoughts, encouragement, hopes and prayers via text, e-mail, facebook or a spoken word to those whom the Lord places on my heart. Sometimes it seems rather awkward, yet I know that as long as I seek to serve and please God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit He will guide my messages in hearts of the receptors.

This morning at church a couple and their young son whom I had never met, sat by me. Near the end of the service, I heard the Lord instruct me through my heart to tell the mother how I could easily see and sense her and her husband's authentic Christian love for their son. Despite the awkwardness, I immediately responded to Christ's voice. The mother thanked me profusely. She repeated her gratitude as we departed the sanctuary. I further stated that their love for their son is indicative of her and her husband's love for each other. Her eyes once again softly leaked with compassion and gratitude as she assured me of their authentic Christian love for one another.

The reason for Christ using me to express this message to this mother remains unknown to me. Yet, just as I Dad didn't always explain why he needed me to run for something for him, neither does God need to explain each of His commands to me.

The above stories have little to do with Rick E. Meyer, rather everything to do with how you will listen to Christ's voice, immediately respond to Christ's voice as you follow Him.

To listen to Christ's voice, assumes we know Christ's voice spoken non-audibly in our heart and mind by the indwelling Holy Spirit. Do you listen and respond to the Holy Spirit? Listening and knowing mandate immediate response. Delays in belief cause delays in belief, we respond according to our belief.

To know Christ's voice, pray—this includes listening, read scripture, associate with mature Christians and journal to aid your calibration of His voice.

How has God used you to touch lives, even when it seems awkward?

Are you prepared and willing to immediately respond to Christ voice in serving His people in whatever method He commands? Trust Him! Seek to honestly say, "Lord, you know that I try to hear, listen and respond to appropriately to your voice. Cause me to glorify you even when I inadvertently mess up in understanding your message and / or how to respond to your message. Lord, thank you for using me, and helping me perpetually improve in listening and responding to Christ's voice spoken to me from the indwelling Holy Spirit."

Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him, and he will act.
(Psalm 37:4-5). Listening and responding to the Christ who sent the indwelling Holy Spirit to believers—delighting in the Lord—results in you and I requesting God to infuse His desires into your heart and my heart.

Think Spiritually : Act Spiritually

A common slogan states that we, Think Globally, Act Locally. This is excellent advice for non-Christians.

As Christians we are called to, Think Spiritually : Act Spiritually. In other words, submit our hearts and minds to power of the Holy Spirit sent by the Son the Lord Jesus Christ from God the Father. The Bible instructs us to act in and with obedient love to the triune God.

Unfortunately, many will probably attempt to add qualifiers on to this statement. Qualifiers simply indicate that our wisdom exceeds God's wisdom, including the confession one may not hear, listen, or respond to God. When we communicate with God in every aspect of life, He will guide us according to His will. Can we, man and women, increase the value of God's will? An affirmative reply suggests the responder believes themselves greater than God—the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit.

Submit your plans to the Lord, He will direct your thoughts.

Prayer Considerations

Consider the persistence of someone asking for an item, opportunity or a favor. Whether the person is a toddler or retired business person, the clarity, diligence details and persistence with which we ask depends on our belief in the power, ability, love, and influence of the person we ask to deliver. Love seeks the best for all involved, consequently the absence of results may result from negative effects to ourselves or others which we either overlook or remain unaware of their occurring as a result of our request.

Your prayer life and my prayer life depends on our belief—as opposed to head knowledge—of God's power, ability, love and influence. God's love seeks the best according to God's wisdom, which equates to the best for us regardless of our agreement—lest you and I believe our wisdom exceeds God's wisdom.

Every conversation I have with Phil Krug from Salina, Kansas regarding our fraternity, he also reminds me to keep praying. Phil tells of starting out living in a 12' x 60' foot trailer house, followed by building a forty-three state insurance agency. He contributes his success to prayer, faith and work. Phil consistently recognizes God's hand in his business, and the necessity of prayer. Does Phil believe in the prosperity gospel, a belief that God provides everything we ask if only we are good enough or give enough money? NO!!!

Phil recognizes God's answer to prayer sometimes contrasts our human desires, God's wisdom far exceeds man. Yet, because of his relationship and the eternal salvation through the belief in Jesus' death and resurrection, Phil knows that his wife whom died from cancer several years ago is now with God the Father, Son—the Lord Jesus Christ in heaven. Despite this loss Phil continues praying for everything because of his faith and belief in the triune God.

As you pray and ponder your spiritual life, consider my fraternity's—Beta Sigma Psi—statement: "A life rooted with Christ in God is the only true goal of human existence."

During the fraternity's award banquet during its national convention in St. Louis—January 2013—alumnus and keynote speaker Jim Folkerts who retired as Vice President of Coca-Cola shared, "faith without deeds is dead" (James 2:17, 26) adding "Prayer is a deed."

Succinctly stated: Your prayer life and my prayer life directly reflect our belief in and our relationship with God the Father, the Lord Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit.

What do you believe?

Your Example ?

During the fall sports seasons, many fans expect great achievements from their favorite high school, college and professional teams.

In the mid-1990s while living in Nebraska; I led "Prayers of the People" before the congregation of a relatively large church. Most expected their beloved Nebraska Cornhuskers to win yet another National Championship in football.

My last prayer remained simple: Lord, help us expend our efforts and strive for excellence in our own lives to reach the national level of success we expect of our favorite teams.

If the members of your favorite team followed your example of effort, discipline and excellence; would they achieve your expected level of success for them?

Healthy Diet

I surpassed 107,000 miles of lifetime running last week, perhaps more. Update: I have now surpassed 121,000 miles and not had the flu since February 2007.
This originated ponderings of comments over the years; especially in regard to my diet. What is a healthy diet?

For many years, and by numerous people, I am told that my diet lacks ‘healthy’ food. Ironically, most who condemn my eating habits possess more body fat, are sick at least once, usually several times, per year. I realize there are probably some who are healthier than I am, yet my body seems to do okay.

The flu bug has conquered me four times since December 1991. With one exception in 1999, my blood pressure and cholesterol remain low. When my diet was most heavily condemned, I was 2.5% body fat; and ran over 100 weekly miles. During a two and one-half year span of heavy training, injury was avoided by prayer, belief, faith and confession of scripture.

Yet, society says I eat and live in an unhealthy manner. The obvious question: How does one define or obtain healthy food? Healthy food is like good deeds, mankind’s efforts make neither good nor bad. Food and deeds are healthy and good when submitted to Christ. Seeking and receiving Christ’s blessings on our food, creates a healthy diet; beneficial exercise and deeds.

Christ tells Peter that all food made by God is good. Unhealthy diet, exercise and deeds exist when we seek our own glory, believing our secular choices create healthy lifestyles. Years ago, many ‘experts’ including the media condemned high fat, high cholesterol diets.

Great-Aunt Ruth Douglass, my grandmother’s sister, delivered food to the shut-ins and remained active into her early 90s. Once when about 92 years old, Aunt Ruth quipped, “This eating bacon and eggs everyday and cooking with lard my whole life is sure killing me at a young age.” Her trademark smile possessed its glowing beam while speaking.

Aunt Ruth entered heaven a few weeks before her 97th birthday. What is the secret to Aunt Ruth’s heath? She requested the Lord’s blessing on her food, thoughts and deeds every day. The Lord provided her health!

Health is less about the years we live, rather the achievements garnered. Do you desire excellent health? Submit your food, thoughts and deeds to the Lord, requesting his blessing on all you eat, think and achieve.

I must go for a run! I pray the Lord blesses this and all runs, along with the food I eat and thoughts before, during and after the run. This has been the key to health and the missing factor when struggling, since my competitive running began June 1978.

Be healthy, Seek the Lord!

THINK INSIDE THE BIBLE!

(This written message is from personal notes recorded in 2004-2005)

Do you frequently hear, “Think outside the box?”

When introduced, the concept initiated expanding our possibility thinking. Unfortunately, many now “Think outside the box” of right and wrong, outside of morals and ethics.

Lucifer / Satan originated "Thinking outside the Box" of God's wisdom, knowledge, and understanding. The serpent then convinced Eve and Adam to "Think outside the Box" of Godly wisdom, God's Word, resulting in the introduction of sin. “Outside the Box” equates to outside of the Bible!

I researched scanned various job postings. Few, if any, list honesty and integrity as requirements for their respective positions. Perhaps, one may argue they lack specific listing because management expects these attributes.

Does management also expect excellent communications skills, serving customers, meeting and exceeding goals, etc? Most job descriptions frequently specific these attributes. Prudence mandates these necessary characteristics as equally necessary.

A great deal of interviewers flinch with the idea of mandating honesty and integrity. Secular organizations and businesses prefer candidates who forgo these concepts to reach and exceed corporate goals. “Profit always, integrity when convenient.”

Rather than, “Think outside the box” of morals and ethics, wisdom suggests we, “Think inside the Bible.”

“Thinking Inside the Bible” generates:

· Love of God

· Love of People

· Righteousness - being right with Christ.

· Morality

· Honesty

· Pure heart and mind

· Integrity

· Forgiveness

· Faith

· Humble Spirit

· Gentle

· Hope

· Peace

These fruits cause self-imposed limits of achievements to disseminate.

The Bible illustrates this barrier elimination in an array of passages including, “Nothing is impossible with God” and “All things are possible through Christ who strengthens us.” Consider this profound revelation: ALL means ALL.

God defines and contains the limits of all good.

The COMPACT OXFORD ENGLISH DICTIONARY defines All, “the greatest possible.” We simply must act in accordance with Christ, the Word made flesh.

Our greatest successful achievements reside in “the greatest possible” from Christ. I invite you to Think Inside The Bible!

Quickly repent, reject thoughts and actions contrasting biblical righteousness and fruits of the Spirit. Forgive yourself and others. Love your peers, family, friends, and competitors as much as you love yourself.

Love desires the absolute best, the deepest possible personal relationship with Jesus Christ. This includes communication with the Holy Spirit.

Love God—Father, Jesus Christ, Holy Spirit—with all of your heart, soul, strength, and mind. If and when anyone invites you to “Think Outside the Box,” rebuke the originator of wicked thoughts, Satan and all his works.

Your greatest possible success hinges upon your ability and willingness to:
